We all know that we need African-centered solutions for African-based problems but how can we make this a reality? Documenting successful sustainability and infrastructure building projects allows these tried and tested solutions to be showcased to offer inspiration and existing frameworks for other projects but this is lacking in Africa, resulting in too many of our projects drawing inspiration from less applicable Western-based solutions. 📁 💼 On Wednesday, April 10th 2024 the RELiEF Consortium met in Bruxelles with our EC Project Officer from CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency for its 1st Interim Review. The UNESCO 9th Africa Engineering Week & 7th Engineering Conference 2023 took off in Tshwane, South Africa this morning. Attended by leaders and delegates from across the continent, with addresses delivered by the Honourable RSA Deputy President Paul Mashatile and Public Works & Infrastructure Minister Sihle Zikalala, as well as ECSA President and other industry leaders. Key takeaways from this morning’s session include: 1) the key role engineering has played in the development of infrastructure and many economies, 2) the role this sector can play in closing the continent’s infrastructure gap, towards AU 2063 Agenda and UN SDGs 2030 Agenda. 3) the importance of delivering high quality and resilient infrastructure, that can withstand the impact of climate change, 4) fostering meaningful partnerships between public, private sector and academia, to drive growth through effective and efficient delivery of economic and social infrastructure. Most importantly, the emphasis that science and innovation is to lead in finding African solutions for African challenges… with a focus on education and training for the youth and women, towards building Africa’s prosperity!
