We are recruiting for two exciting roles in our teaching and learning team in the Luminos Fund. The teaching and learning team is responsible for developing teacher guides and student books for our award winning structured pedagogy programs. The team also supports country teams to deliver outstanding training and coaching. In other words, this team is right at the heart of our efforts to drive learning outcomes for children. We are open to recruiting incredible people at any of three levels - Program Analyst, Associate Director or Director. So, whether you are early in your career in global education and want to develop your skills or you are years into a career focussing on early grade literacy and numeracy, there could be a role to suit you. Please check out the adverts here: https://lnkd.in/eK-ZpsEs
With sincere apologies, I am unable to respond to individual enquiries about these roles but if you think you might be a good fit, please consider applying!
Luminos is one of the most cost-effective and impactful education organizations out there - but don't be fooled into thinking that we achieve high learning outcomes through some magic formula. Of course there are key principles that we follow in our programming but, just as importantly, we are impactful because we measure whether children are learning - and then we iterate until they are. From my many years working in this field I have come to the conclusion that it you are just assuming that children are learning in your program then they almost certainly are not.
Delivering effective education, especially in low-resourced settings, is hard. Successful #education initiatives marry the best of global learning science and local insights and apply an iterative approach to implementation. Here are the key capabilities needed to create an organizational culture of iterative design from the latest element of the #LuminosMethod 📋
📌A deep commitment to an ongoing journey
📌A focus on getting foundational learning right
📌 Consistent classroom-level implementation
📌Data collection and analytics
📌A staff committed to excellence
📌Extensive communication and consensus building with partners

Great research from the UNICEF Innocenti team here - trying to understand the practices of schools which are doing better than expected on foundational skills in Zambia. They find a key role for headteachers in driving effective instruction. This lines up with a whole lot of other research that shows that good teaching generally doesn't just happen - even after teachers have received good training. There is a need for ongoing coaching and support to gradually shift teaching practice towards more effective approaches.
📊 Our #DataMustSpeak research analyses education data to identify positive deviant schools – schools that outperform others in learning outcomes, despite operating in the same context with the same resources.
Our NEW EVIDENCE from Zambia revealed that in positive deviant schools, head teachers dedicate more time and resources to supporting teachers’ instructional practices. They also implement monitoring systems that track student and teacher attendance.
Discover what positive deviant schools in Zambia are doing to support students’ learning. ⬇️
Thank you to the Ministry of Education in Zambia, the Global Partnership for Education, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and UNICEF Zambia for making this research possible!

Do you happen to know any outstanding accountants?? We are currently searching for someone to be based in the UK or US who would be able to use their strong financial skills to enable our incredibly impactful NGO to continue supporting education for out-of-school children. We are considering candidates from junior to senior - salary range is from £35k to £65k. It's a lovely organisation and the line manager for this role is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Please spread the word 😊!

Love this post from my former DFID colleague Peter. It is so tempting to believe/hope that tech (AI, knowledge-sharing portals, online networks etc) will bridge the gap between research and policy but it is a complex, messy process that needs a complex, messy solution - i.e. a human being! These entrepreneurs can be researchers themselves - when I worked on a big government-funded research programme, the main impacts were not delivered via the research outputs but rather via the policy entrepreneur work that researchers did 'on the side'. Or they can be professional nerds (like both Peter and I!). But, as Peter points out, they need to be steeped in the field of research and they need to be passionate about getting the research messages out to people making decisions.
Thinking in progress. Consultant. Adviser. Formerly: Director, U4 Anti Corruption Resource Centre. DFID Governance & Social Development Adviser; Led DFID Governance/Conflict/Inclusion/Humanitarian research.
How does social and political research really contribute to better policy and practice?
We can build structures and systems and funds but should not overlook the messier reality of human agency, dogged pursuit, passion, connection, chance, that curious Tweet that you once followed up on....
Getting from nerd to herd, and the undervalued role of 'policy entrepreneurs'.
