Let Your Dreams Take Flight

Thoughts for July

Summer is such a delightful time of year everywhere.  However all things considered, you have to go pretty far to beat the summer weather in Southern Ontario.  That is, once you're out of the Urban Heat Islands that surround larger urban areas, and into the open areas such as golf courses, parks, and lakes, it is generally quite moderate.
In our backyard and across the street, our gardens are coming along like gangbusters.  With all the rain we've had coupled with the warm temperatures, everything is moving along nicely. We'll have peas and beans by the middle of the month and tomatoes by August.  The lettuce and Kale are beginning to overwhelm. We'll never eat half of what we're growing so the neighbours are in for treats.
Our granddaughter and Brian made cookies a few days ago when her father brought her by for a visit.  She was so excited to mix the "gredents" together.  It took a while, but in the end there were some tasty cookies born from an epic kitchen mess and Sadie well over the limit for sugar which I'm sure played out well later on at her mother's.
With planting and weeding out of the way - at least for a while, Brian and I have been playing golf where he works as a starter on Sundays.  We make a point of walking at least 9-holes on a very hilly layout.  There are several portions that climb quite dramatically and leaves us huffing and puffing.  We both are taking better care of ourselves, and it's a good measure to see how hard you're breathing when you get to the 4th tee.
Between now and September, 7-planets will move into retrograde.  Amazingly, around the end of August and the first week of September, all seven of them will be in retrograde at the same time.
I can't imagine what's on the horizon, but look for some big changes happening. Let's hold on to our hats and make whatever happens a positive experience for yourself and others - as much as you can.  All I can suggest is we're kind to one another.  Kindness goes such a long way toward creating a more positive world.

As always, if you are interested in a class that isn't currently scheduled, let me know and I'll see what I can come up with.  I also offer one-on-one classes if you are more comfortable.
For those of you who live nearby, I am always open for a walk when my life permits.
Namaste,
Karen

Herb of the Month

Mint

Catnip is beneficial for colds, virus, fevers, and infectious disease. It is used to calm an upset stomach, reduce gas and is an overall pain reliever for headaches and cramps. Relaxes muscles, relieves stress, anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, and hives.

Note from Brian

I originally chose Catnip as my Herb of the Month because I'm offering a free plant to anyone who shows up with a small pot to transport one of the dozens that are now growing in the backyard.  It seems it's also bringing in every stray cat in the neighbourhood.  There's a couple of Male Orange Tabbies that have been hanging around.  I think they're already scoping out potential winter getaways such as the garage or even the basement (which of course means eventually the bed)  I am hesitant in some ways to try and "bring one of them in".  He's living a cat's life out there - scrounging, hiding, fighting.  I can't imagine there's a lot of time for play in his day to day and his chances of peril are magnitudes greater than a cat who lives indoors or sits on the front porch during the day and on a lap at night.  However, bringing him in (domesticating him) would have to include neutering him, and for the sanity of the neighbourhood and to keep the feral cat population down.  It would involve a 180 degree turn in it's lifestyle.  No hunting, sleeping under the deck somewhere, coming and going at your leisure - going form 100% independent to 100% dependent on a human for everything.  Sure your life expectancy goes from like 4 to 14 and fleas and tics and hunger and fear are a distant memory, but surely they've been replaced by tedium and any sort of meaning other than looking out the window until supper.
I know for most people it's a no-brainer.  We love our cats and would do anything to make sure they stay safe and healthy and think nothing of spending thousands of dollars a year to make it so.  But, by doing this are we somehow insulating ourselves from the harsh reality that is "Mother Nature"?  Does your well looked after cat or dog mean you don't have to consider those who are less looked after?  "I've done my part.  This cat was a rescue and because of me it's living the life of Riley."  Kind of like adopting a child from the wilds of Africa, bringing them to America/Canada and turning them into a westerner.
I confess I have mixed feelings regarding these kinds of arrangements.  A wild cat is free.  Apart from wars and western exploitation, most Africans live their lives totally different than we do. They are more in tune with nature and their surroundings.  Their needs are simple.  They entertain themselves and pay homage to the seasons and the weather instead of some grey beard in the sky. Is that worse way to live than we do?  Sure we live longer but what else? Are we happier? Healthier? Better nourished?
It's a privileged, but dim and unrealistic view of the world to believe that one, tiny segment of the world population that we live in should be the goal of cats and Africans everywhere.
Brian

Goodness is about character - integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage, and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat other people. - Dennis Prager

If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed. - Albert Einstein

Be grateful for what you have and stop complaining - it bores everybody else, does you no good, and doesn't solve any problems. - Zig Ziglar  (I love this one)

The song Africa by Toto was released as the 3rd single from their album Toto IV released in 1982.  Written by Steve Paich and Jeff Porcaro, neither of whom had ever actually been to Africa, tells of a man’s love of a continent.  Paich based the lyrics on images from a late-night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering.  The booming vocals, the incredible harmonies and musicianship make this one of my all-time fav’s.

"Africa"

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in twelve-thirty flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation

I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say
"Hurry, boy, it's waiting there for you"

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti

I seek to cure what's deep inside
Frightened of this thing that I've become

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

"Hurry, boy, she's waiting there for you"
