"You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear"
(16th century proverb)

A solo show from Marie Ulmer

This solo show celebrates "gleaning" - a way of life that embraces 'reduce, re-use, recycle' - which has been an important part of Marie's practice. In this exhibition the majority of the works are made from repurposed materials, as well as pen & inks and watercolours.

What started decades ago in Canada as a crayon drawing on the wall was the spark for a lifetime of creating. Now, more than 20 years in Whangarei, she is still living on the boat that carried her family across the Pacific and she feels blessed to be able to continue creating.

At home and abroad, in studio, classroom, pilot house and garden, and on land and sea, her pen, brush and needle have never been still. Marie has studied painting, sculpture, printmaking, fibre arts, ceramics, fashion design and costuming. As a teacher of Textiles, Art and Design at Pompallier College, she dressed “casts of thousands” in diverse and ambitious school productions. Creating costumes for The Phantom of the Opera, Whangarei Theatre Company, was the biggest costume canvas of all (a few of which will be on show).

Opening this coming Friday, 22 March, 5pm.
Exhibition Duration: 22 March - 13 April

Cataclysmic - By Maxine Hartnell
Opening Friday 19 April, 5pm.

Step into the surreal world of "Cataclysmic," where Maxine Hartnell's obsession with all things feline takes centre stage, defying gravity and embarking on journeys.

Maxine Hartnell draws inspiration from the realm of pop surrealism and symbolism, transporting viewers to a strange and whimsical world where unusual fairytale narratives come to life. She has a passion for nurturing young minds and is a core Children's Art teacher at the Quarry Arts Centre and through "Just Imagine" Art Classes for Kids.

Opening Friday 19 April, 5pm.
Duration: 19 April - 18 May.
The Creative CUP!

The 2024 Quarry Annual Fundraiser will take the form of Cups and Mugs this year! The exhibition will be on for 3 weeks, with the final week being auction week.

As with the Great Plate this is an opportunity for the Quarry community to gift back to the Centre, submitting work to help fundraise for key infrastructure. Participants can either make their own cup/mug, or Marilyn Wheeler, Julie Cromwell and Anabelle McCusker will be making cups for artists to beautify. These have a small $5 donation to contribute to clay and firing costs. Julie's have come out of the kiln and are ready for pick up!

To be part of this fundraiser, either as an artist, or a volunteer behind-the-scenes message creative@quarryarts.org to find out more.

Wood Fire News
Manawa Community Firing
Manawa* will be fired up around Winter Solstice (mid-June). All work that goes into the kiln needs to be bisqued first, so it's time to start creating!

You can catch up with the build on our Facebook and Instagram.

A big thank you to all the funders that contributed to this milestone: Great Plate '22, Oxford Sports Trust, 'Buy a Brick' and backed by the Quarry Arts Centre.

The next step is to build the chimney for the kiln, which is planned for late April.

Look out for white underglaze pencils coming soon!
You can check out the Chrysanthos glazes currently sold at the Quarry HERE.

Glaze Sale Continues!
