The week at #SkollWorldForum2024 was many things – stimulating at an intellectual, cognitive, & affective level. But most of all, 'twas a process of being inspired by men & women who draw huge circles around them – that impact many many more. Working tirelessly to make changes in huge systems. Small changes in overwhelmingly huge and interconnected systems – 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 ℎ𝑜𝑝𝑒 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠.
Some key learnings from the week:
- 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞: It was heartening to see the systemic lens being applied to all problems in the space – with discussions around incentives at different levels, thinking of 2nd order effects & consideration of system leakages from get-go. Great to learn from the work of a few organisations such as Ilifa Labantwana and EIDU in solving the education problem from a systemic lens.
- 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 & 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐥: With great capital, comes great responsibility for impact. There is capital to back quest for solid evidence for capital - Some of the most interesting discussions we had were around using different M&E tools & approaches to measure impact, when to use RCTs, when not, why impact may elude, how to measure hard-to-objectify things like attitudes & many more! Thank you for these enriching conversations IDinsight The Agency Fund
- 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬: Thanks to a powerful session with Wendy Kopp & Aashti Zaidi Hai we reflected on taking system change forward to population level change. Rigorous discussions on what the barriers to collective action in the sector are & how orgs can foster a culture of leveraging networks
I always thought a good conference is one where one takes away more questions than only answers and Skoll was a more than fertile place to satisfy the quest to ask self the right and meaningful questions.
Finally, a hat tip to all the Indian social sector leaders I got a chance to interact with – Raj Gilda, Madhukar Reddy Banuri, Richa Gupta Sohini Bhattacharya Maharshi Vaishnav – Looking forward to keep these connections in the coming year!
And last last but proverbial most Kruti Bharucha – thank you for this wonderful, exhilarating opportunity – all your warnings of the excitement, bedlam, running like headless chickens (chicks? 😊) were very valid but thoroughly devoured.
