The Story of the Tigers
The present Richmond Football Club was founded on February 10, 1885 at the Royal Hotel in Richmond. The first committee chose all blue with a yellow and black sash; cap with yellow and black stripe running from back to front but from 1887, Richmond would wear the now famous yellow and black strip.
Richmond Football Club's first game was played on April 25, 1885 at the Richmond Cricket Ground (Punt Road Oval) against Cremorne and despite playing 20 men to Cremorne's 23, Richmond won this historic encounter 2.12 (24) to 1.4 (10).
The first great era of the club between 1919 and 1934, Richmond won four premierships and was runner-up on seven occasions.
In 1931, Jack Dyer made his senior debut with the Tigers. 'Captain Blood', a gentleman off the ground, a rugged giant on it, strode Punt Road like a colossus. Dyer's influence on the Club, and its identity, far exceeded his then VFL record of 312 games. He coached the Tigers from 1941 to 1952, and was captain-coach of Richmond's 1943 premiership team. If you wanted to personify Richmond in a single man, you need not look further than Jack. His presence is still felt at the ground and enhanced by a statue outisde Punt Road oval.
The club's shift across Yarra Park to the MCG in 1965, arguably Richmond's most successful era began with players of the calibre of Royce Hart, Francis Bourke and Kevin Bartlett (the Club's games record holder with 403), the Tigers, under the coaching guidance of Tom Hafey won four premierships.
Richmond is one of the 'big four' Melbourne clubs, the 'Eat 'em Alive' spirit that arose in the 1920s is still manifested in football's most passionate supporter base. In 2018, Richmond was the first club to reach 100,000 members in a season. Tiger fans are loud, proud and fiercely loyal. The enjoys strong community associations with a Multicultural Schools Football Program, Korin Gamadji Institute and The Alannah And Madeline Foundation.

The 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final was played at the Brisbane Cricket Ground (Gabba) on Saturday 24th October, 2020.
Due to Coronavirus, the 2020 Grand Final was played interstate for the first time in 122 years at the Brisbane Cricket Ground (Gabba). It was also the first ever "night" grand final.
