Simplicity in Innovation

Baratza is consistently bringing new and fresh ideas to the table for home baristas, and the Sette 30 is no exception. The Sette 30 is, at its core, a pared down version of the ever-popular Sette 270. With fewer adjustment steps, the Sette 30 is an ideal choice for those just starting with espresso at home, or for anyone who wants to pull great shots of espresso on a budget. Beyond espresso, the Sette 30 is capable of grinding for brewing applications that require finer grind settings, such as the AeroPress, the Hario V60, and most automatic brewers on the market.

What’s Inside?

At the heart of every grinder is the burr set, and it’s important to know what your burrs are bringing to the table. The Sette 30 utilizes 40mm, conical, Etzinger S1 (steel) burrs that work tremendously for espresso applications. However, these aren’t your run-of-the-mill, conical burrs. Baratza has engineered the Sette 30 so that the outer burr ring spins, instead of the usual inner burr spinning, and this serves two major functions. Firstly, by allowing the outer burr to spin, you can expect to see faster grind times. Secondly, and maybe most importantly, these burrs feature a ‘straight-through’ design, meaning that the ground coffee drops straight down from the burrs into your portafilter or grounds catch, mitigating retained coffee.

Programmability & Functionality

While the Sette 30 is a simplified version of the Sette 270 by Baratza, that doesn’t mean that the Sette 30 doesn’t boast some impressive, hands-off features. The Sette 30 features a backlit LCD display that allows you to set the grind timer to ensure you achieve your desired dose every time. This preset can be changed by 0.1 seconds for extremely precise dosing. Simply dial in your grind setting, hit the ‘start’ button, and you’ll have a full dose of espresso in less than five seconds. The Sette 30 also includes a plastic grounds catch as well as adjustable portafilter forks, and the burrs can be easily removed without the aid of tools for simple cleaning without the need for recalibration.

Is It Always Better to Grind Fresh?

The world of specialty coffee is full of standards and status quo. Some are instrumental to our progress and help to define us as an industry. Others, though, have little to no supporting data or objective value. When you come across rules like these, do you ever find yourself asking, "Says who?" From water temperature ("off boil") to tamping pressure (30 pounds), these fuzzy standards are everywhere, yet widely accepted.
