opportunity

USC Dornsife is your personal, private college, on the edge of the intellectual universe — in the heart of one of America’s great research universities. It’s your new niche in the rich social fabric of Los Angeles — the nation’s most diverse city. It’s where you’ll find people just like you, and make friends who are nothing like you. It’s the ideal academic environment. It’s your lab, your home, and your playground. It’s micro and macro — where you’ll discover the intricacies of the fields and the ideas that move you. It’s where you major in opportunity — exploring countless combinations from over 80 majors and 80 minors across the liberal arts. And double majoring in four years. (No, really.) It’s hard work and praise. Hard work and challenge. Hard work and pizza, study groups, and all-nighters. It’s where you study with world-class faculty, in a one-to-one environment — where you have academic support 24/7/365 — where you learn to collaborate with peers in your major and across academic disciplines — where you have the freedom to pursue your dreams, thoughts, and beliefs, and debate them with confidence and intellectual force. It’s where you discover who you are and who you want to become. Oh, and by the way — it’s the time of your life.

Individual attention. Space for reinvention. Dornsife gives new meaning to educational opportunity. Alumnus Eric Goldman and student Kyle Pham discuss accessing resources and pursuing their passions. Why Dornsife?

What Dornsife experience most stands out for you?

ERIC GOLDMAN: I went into college undecided about what I wanted to study. And Dornsife, more than any other school I applied to, was supportive of that. Dornsife sees its job as helping you experience new ideas and classes that will enable you to make informed choices about your major. Because of its interdisciplinary approach, you get to explore a lot of fields without having to pigeonhole yourself until you figure out what you like.

ERIC GOLDMAN: USC supports you in overseas travel in a really unique way. I studied abroad at the London School of Economics — where I was able to take classes toward my major in economics — and Dornsife did everything possible to facilitate the process. They have an office in London and a full-time professor whose entire job is to make sure you are having the best experience. The individual attention I received was remarkable.

KYLE PHAM: I loved the collaborative environment and how involved everyone is here. And the sheer number of majors and minors is incredible. I’m a double major in cognitive science and philosophy, politics and law, which means I get to study the human mind and how human reasoning works from a multitude of perspectives.

KYLE PHAM: I hope to become a lawyer who works with startups. Dornsife enabled me to take classes taught by USC law professors and experience the Socratic method firsthand. It was an amazing experience.

What makes a student successful at Dornsife? KYLE PHAM: At Dornsife you are encouraged to branch out and ask questions. I took courses outside my comfort zone that ended with me

adding another major and considering law as a career much more seriously. The future is much more exciting when you create a lot of options for yourself — and getting more options starts with an open mind. ERIC GOLDMAN: Students should not be afraid to show a passion for something. I always advise people to be uncompromising about that passion, and to use Dornsife’s tremendous resources in pursuit of what they really want to achieve. Don’t just study abroad or write a thesis because you can; do it because you feel compelled to. Dornsife gives you opportunities to pursue your passion in unique and surprising ways.

“ At Dornsife you are encouraged to branch out and ask questions. The future is more exciting when you create options for yourself — and getting more options starts with an open mind.” 29

Customized learning. Personalized support. No matter where you start out at Dornsife, the end goal is the same: spreading your wings to reach your full potential. Alumna Ashley Luo and student Andrew Morris contemplate the beauty of the double major and the merits of math. What sealed your decision to come to Dornsife? ASHLEY LUO: I applied to USC Dornsife because of its prestigious reputation, so when I received a full ride, I accepted immediately. ANDREW MORRIS: When I visited as a prospective student, I was struck right away by the community here. I could tell Dornsife was the kind of place where I would make friends for life. It was then that I realized I had found my new home!

How did you decide what to study at Dornsife? ASHLEY LUO: When I applied, I was fascinated with trying to understand people – how we feel and how we think — so I came in as a psychology major. But then I started taking economics courses, and I discovered that econ is closely tied to decisionmaking and behavior. Later I also fell in love with the mathematics that underlies economic models and analyses. Ultimately, I ended

10

up with a double major in economics and applied mathematics. The flexibility to switch majors at Dornsife allowed me to follow my interests wherever they went. ANDREW MORRIS: I was drawn to cognitive science, which is perhaps the most rapidly developing field in the social and natural sciences. At Dornsife, I was able to combine courses in computer science, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and linguistics. Mathematics interested me because it challenged me to think differently and quantitatively. The combination of both majors has been really exciting.

How are you applying your Dornsife degrees? ASHLEY LUO: I am a data scientist at Verizon Wireless, using statistical models and machine learning algorithms to understand and predict customer behavior. I use concepts from my classes — like econometrics, probability theory, statistics, and computer

science — on a daily basis. My writing skills from all of my Dornsife classes also come in handy when I’m trying to deliver elegant and persuasive results to management!

What do you see as the value of a liberal arts education? ANDREW MORRIS: I’ve gained skills that will yield dividends in whatever career or lifestyle I choose. Dornsife encourages students to pursue majors and minors across disciplines, study abroad, do research, make time for student organizations, engage in professional development, and explore one of the world’s greatest cities. I haven’t come across students from other universities — or even other schools at USC — who have this kind of variety in their schedules, but I meet them at Dornsife every day.

“ When I visited as a prospective student, I was struck right away by the community here. I could tell Dornsife was the kind of place where I would make friends for life.” 11

Your ticket to anywhere. At Dornsife, finding yourself and finding a career are not mutually exclusive. Student Marmarah Similien and alumna Jennie Zhang share their thoughts on flexibility, opportunity, and doing what they love. When it came to choosing a college, you had a lot of options. What led you to Dornsife?

How is your degree shaping your professional path?

MARMARAH SIMILIEN: The options here are endless. I came to USC knowing I wanted to be an English major, but also wanting the freedom to explore all my different interests. Dornsife is perfect for that because it brings together so many courses of study, so I knew it would be easy to minor in something like biology, or double major, or even change my major. Within this one school, you can do almost anything.

JENNIE ZHANG: Today I work in data operations at Uber. I’m the person who connects the data consumers to the data engineers. My background in English has helped a lot. So much of my job is communicating. Everyone on my team sends me their documents to review — they rely on my editing!

JENNIE ZHANG: I actually went to USC for its joint program in business and film. My first year, I participated in Thematic Option, Dornsife's alternative, humanities-focused general education program, and absolutely loved it. I decided it would be a better use of my time to study English and take tons of diverse classes than to stay in business school and only focus on one thing. Ultimately, I knew I’d be able to take my liberal arts knowledge and skills and apply them in business! It was win-win.

.

MARMARAH SIMILIEN: I also love editing — in fact, right now I have an internship editing a book, and it’s a dream job. It would be amazing to do it full-time, and Dornsife puts that within my reach. We have such a strong alumni network, and I’ve been in contact with Trojans who are working at editing and publishing firms. To be on that road and to meet other people who have walked it successfully — it keeps the dream alive.

What do you think makes Dornsife special? MARMARAH SIMILIEN: I was worried coming in: How would I get noticed in such a big school with so many things going on? But I’ve discovered it’s very hard to feel like you’re invisible here. Dornsife is always reaching out with incredible opportunities. The size of it makes it even better — it opens up so many doors. JENNIE ZHANG: For me, the small class sizes were a huge plus. I was in some with only four or five students! You get to know your classmates really well, and the professors are truly invested in how they can help you.

Vast resources. Breakthrough discovery. WHERE LEARNING COMES ALIVE We believe in education that is active and three-dimensional. Learning in lecture is important — but pairing those lessons with on-the-ground opportunities for hands-on research is equally vital. At Dornsife, undergraduates take advantage of dynamic resources for research, working alongside faculty and graduate students to create knowledge and expand the boundaries of possibility. Dornsife students leverage programs like Student Opportunities for Academic Research (SOAR), a $1,000 grant that enables undergraduates to join existing research projects which explore questions around neuroscience, immigration, modern art, conservation psychology, and more. The Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF) offers students up to $3,000 in funding to collaborate on original faculty research — around the world — on topics ranging from water sustainability and cancer biology, to political development in the Middle East and the role of the World Bank in advancing human rights. Dornsife also puts students in the driver’s seat in tackling problembased research: examining complex social challenges with implications that cross boundaries. Problems Without Passports takes students across the globe to pioneer innovative approaches
