Job description

Prevail Fund is a start-up initiative that is attempting to raise and deploy very large sums of capital towards the most impactful solutions in the world. Their argument rests on three logical building blocks:

1) Possible: They believe there are enough concentrated resources in the world to mobilize up to very large amounts of capital towards specific impactful solutions.

2) Powerful: When deploying capital at a very large scale, it can be used to leverage larger forces (i.e. Government) and help to push a given solution to a global tipping point.

3) Practical: By focusing on specific solution sets we can execute large global campaigns gifts with high effectiveness and fidelity, creating economies of scale.

Prevail Fund has identified global education, specifically the expansion of a structured pedagogy approach to early literacy, as an especially promising initiative. They believe that a large global structured pedagogy program could dramatically improve learning outcomes for more than 25 million children, while also improving the national education systems of Governments that hold more than 50% of the world's children in learning poverty.

They have conducted initial research into structured pedagogy, built relationships with some leading experts and implementers, and developed very initial plans for executing a large scale global program in Structured Pedagogy, and FLN more broadly. As we approach several promising fundraising opportunities, you will be responsible for working with the Prevail team and leading implementers to develop a shovel-ready execution plan. Specifically, you will be responsible for:

  • Assess Potential Organizations: Assessing the support required for potential field implementers to grow through:
  • Field visits to offices and projects
  • Asking great strategic questions to challenge organizations how to improve
  • Rigorous review of internal systems and documents
  • Review of impact data
  • Interviews with staff and leading external experts and peers
  • Data and Impact Measurement
  • Support Prevail to develop a global data collection system that organizations can use to improve their learning outcomes, and share globally to learn from each other
  • Help to develop and design support mechanisms for organizations to build their own internal data teams and the muscle to use that data to improve outcomes
  • Work with global experts to develop an open source data collection infrastructure that can allow for accurate data collection, sharing and AB testing.
  • Support Organizations in the Initiative
  • Support Mechanisms: Diagnose and build out support systems that each organization may need in order to scale to reach their potential impact. This could include:
  • Mapping out a JD for staff person prevail could hire and second to an org
  • Creating a training for an organization to improve in a key area
  • Partnering or contracting with an outside organization to provide a key service
  • Stakeholder Management:
  • Creating systems to ensure meaningful engagement with the end-users of an education system, such as through feedback loops, including the voices of teachers, parents and children
  • Managing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including education experts, government officials, implementers and other funders
  • Developing a national stakeholder map for each target country, including government, teachers’ unions, curriculum experts and others
  • Regular Strategic Conversations: : Engage in regular strategic conversations with organizations to help ensure they are on track, and that we are able to support them in what they do best. 
  • Data and Information Tracking: As part of any good engagement with stakeholders, you will help to ensure that Prevail always has the most important data and information about any country or organization easily available. This will support better decision making and allow them to be the most informed for donors and their grantees.
  • Strategic Prevail Work:
  • Building detailed overall work-plans: not only will these plans be integral to our conversations with potential donors, they will use to implement a a global education initiative if they succeed at fundraising.
  • Grant Making Strategies: Working with the Prevail team to design successful grant making strategies, from how we offer support services to organizations, to how we decide to pay by results to encourage the most effective outcomes.
  • Ecosystem Grants: While Prevail will keep its focus on Structured Pedagogy, you will help to explore and identify the broader ecosystem and what specific investments could be made to create large impacts in the markets where we are working.
  • Other General Work:
  • Donor Materials: Packaging high potential interventions into compelling ‘giving products’, e.g. synthesizing research and diligence into communicable content, aligning key stakeholders etc.
  • Team Building: This is a new start-up, remote team. They need everyone to support the development of the team as they grow, keeping them focused, and excited to deliver on the opportunities in front of them.
  • Administration: Prevail is a start-up, as such, there may be some administrative work to help ensure we are in compliance with all key activities necessary to run our foundation.

CAREER GROWTH:

Prevail Fund has a culture of constant learning and they invest in developing people. Although it is a start-up environment, you will have regular check-ins with your manager, regular career feedback sessions, and constant feedback generally. Constructive career growth is very important to them.

QUALIFICATIONS:

This is a two-year contractual position and the expected minimum commitment is at least one-year. Candidates who fit the following criteria are encouraged to apply:

  • Ownership. You will work with the team to develop “shovel-ready” programming that can realistically absorb hundreds of millions of dollars in funding. This doesn’t mean just putting together well-written reports – you, along with your team, are on the hook for delivering an actual program that can realistically absorb large amounts of capital.
  • Leadership. You will take the lead on key initiatives, as well as be in a role to lead the implementers we work with. You have an ability to bring together groups of people and align them behind an exciting vision.
  • Big and small. You can think strategically and form a critical path – yet you also sweat the small stuff. You have strong project management skills with exceptional ability to manage multiple highly detailed work streams simultaneously.
  • Strong prior work experiences. You’ve led teams to achieve ambitious scale targets. You’ve also dealt with teams and individuals who were not doing well, and found a way to support them through feedback and inspiration to achieve the goals they are capable of.
  • Research ability. You have experience conducting secondary research. In this role, research activities might range from analyzing international development RCTs to building detailed profiles of target donors.
  • Concise communication. You can develop targeted memos and decks to communicate our ideas to partners and donors in a clear and compelling way.
  • Data driven. analytical skills; i.e. ability to analyze sector data, size/model project funding needs.
  • Humility. We are looking for leaders who bring good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service. You are ready to grow by acting on frequent intensive feedback from your colleagues.
  • Exposure. Significant experience in the field of international development is an asset. If you have worked with a range of partners (donors, private foundations, implementing organizational, research orgs, etc.) or you have sector experience in international education, global health, climate change and/or agriculture, you are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Language: English required. Fluency in Hindi, French, Amharic, and/or Swahili would be an asset.

PREFERRED START DATE: As soon as possible – applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

JOB LOCATION: Flexible with strong preference for candidates based in South Asia or Africa, and preference for candidates with Global South citizenship Significant remote work possible, medium amount of travel.

COMPENSATION: Commensurate with experience.

DURATION: Full-time job. Open to considering a part-time start if there is a commitment to transitioning to full time long-term.
