KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of targeted subsidies will be rolled out as soon as the government identifies a suitable mechanism, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the government is still working on the mechanism.

"There is a team working on it now. There have been some proposals but we are not too convinced in terms of its effectiveness after implementation," said Anwar

"It is unlike electricity which is more straightforward with big houses or factories. It needs to be studied for diesel," he added.

Anwar said this when speaking to the media after visiting Pusat Penjaja Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman here on Thursday (June 15).

When asked about the timeline to implement the subsidy scheme, Anwar said if it was ready, the government could carry it out "tomorrow".

However, he declined to give a definite period but added that the government will do it as fast as possible.

On Wednesday, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said discussions between the Economy Ministry and the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) have started on the types of aid to be provided under the new targeted subsidies approach.

He added that they have started discussions with MTEN on who should get what.
