Kedah MB under probe for sedition, awaiting further action from AG, Anwar tells Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is currently being probed under the Sedition Act for his alleged remarks that the Federal Constitution should be amended so that Penang can be returned to Kedah and is awaiting further action from the Attorney General, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that he received one report from the police against the Kedah Mentri Besar for issuing statements that the Constitution should be amended so that Penang can be returned to Kedah as well as that there was strong evidence, based on the law, that Penang belongs to Kedah.

"As someone who is in a high position, such statements are irresponsible. The police have initiated their investigation based on the existing laws, to ensure the remarks that go against the principles of the Constitution and the law, will not be repeated.

"Some of the reports have been submitted to the Attorney General and are awaiting action," he said in reply to a question from Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan) during the Prime Minister's Question Time on Tuesday (June 6).

Lim had sought an explanation from the Prime Minister regarding Sanusi’s claim, which is causing anxiety among the residents of Penang as well as threatening the harmony and peace in the country.

Anwar said that the remarks were made possibly due to the upcoming state elections.

"Is it because of greed of power due to the state elections, you are willing to sacrifice the principles of the law and the Constitution?

"That is why I would fully allow the Attorney General to take the appropriate action," said Anwar.
