FIND HARDWOOD, VINYL, TILE AND MORE FOR EVERY STYLE & BUDGET
Hardwood flooring is costly and prone to scratches, dents, and water damage. On the contrary, laminate flooring is made of composite wood pressed together and has the look and feel of real hardwood. The best laminate flooring brands create easier to clean and more durable products. These products are more than natural wood, making them ideal for high-traffic areas and rooms exposed to moisture or direct sunlight.
Laminate flooring is a wood alternative made of a multi-layer composite of organic and synthetic materials, making it durable and affordable. Most laminate floors have three main layers, though some products may have a fourth layer. These layers are, in order, from the bottom up:
Here are a few factors to consider when selecting laminate flooring for your home to help you determine the perfect laminate flooring for your home or office.
Choose Based on Your Lifestyle, Not Just Your Goals
Consider your lifestyle and the degradation that the laminate flooring will experience. If you have children, pets, or a lot of visitors, look for a low-gloss finish that will hide some of the scratches. Choose laminate flooring planks with durable, scratch-resistant protective layers.
Don’t Forget to Include Laminate Floor Underlayment
Underlayment is required for all laminate flooring. Some laminate floor products include this layer, while others do not. Underlayment prevents the floor from clicking against the subfloor as you walk, giving it a softer and more comfortable feel. If you opt for the Do It Yourself process, it makes the installation of the planks easier. Consult your local laminate flooring retailer to determine the best type of underlayment for your laminate flooring.
AC is an abbreviation for abrasion criteria, the rating system used to test the best-laminated flooring options’ durability and resistance. It ranges from AC1 to AC5, but some AC6 products are also available. The higher the number of abrasions, the more resistant it is to wear.
There are two types of laminate flooring. These are engineered wood and plastic laminate.
Engineered Wood
There are multiple layers of material inside an engineered wood, pressed together to form a plank. The bottom and core layers are three to twelve layers of fiberboard, plywood, or unfinished hardwood. The top layer, the veneer, is made of a fragile piece of natural wood. Because the top wear layer is real hardwood, engineered wood closely resembles the appearance of natural hardwood. According to the thickness of the top layer, engineered wood can be sanded and refinished up to three times to refurbish the flooring.
Plastic Laminate
Plastic laminate flooring, as opposed to engineered wood, is entirely man-made and composed of several layers. The backer, also known as the bottom layer, serves as a moisture barrier. The core layer is a high-density fiberboard, which resists dents and serves as the flooring’s backbone. The design layer sits on top of the inner core and includes a high-definition photographic image—most images attempt to simulate wood, but there are also stone-like laminates. The clear top coat protects the surface from damage such as fading and scratches.
Laminate flooring costs less than hardwood floors with the same look and feel. Laminate flooring can be as long-lasting as wood flooring. Many laminate flooring options are self-installable, allowing you to save more money. If you choose laminate flooring for your home improvement project, keep things like AC ratings, water resistance, style variations, and so on in mind. It won’t be difficult to find the best laminate flooring for your home with hundreds of styles.
Although laminate flooring lacks the natural look and feel of hardwood flooring, it is more durable, making it the best for homes with young children or pets. It is also less costly. Laminate flooring is a good option if you want eco-friendly flooring. While it is a composite and contains adhesives and plastics, it contains far more naturally derived materials than vinyl flooring. But unless you’re considering a natural material (like hemp flooring), you could do worse on the green flooring spectrum.
