Juba City Legislative Council resumes work after recess

The members of the Juba City Legislative Council resumed work on Wednesday after a long recess.

The House had been on recess since December 12, 2023, after a long continuity of its activities without a break.

Addressing the media, the Mayor of Juba City Council, Flora Gabriel, said the council will strive to ensure that strong socio-economic development is realised in the city.

“We are working on building a strong institution and administrative system that is generally capable of facilitating programmes of the council promoting and encouraging development at all levels of the council and strengthening the social-economic development of the communities of Juba City Council,” Flora said.

She added that the council is committed to improving the infrastructure in the city and delivering social services to Juba residents.

“We will embark on the opening of internal feeder roads, the construction and maintenance of bridges and culverts, and lighting streets within the city. We shall support the construction of roads being funded and implemented by the national government,” Flora explained.

The mayor said there is a plan to demolish structures built on unauthorised spaces such as football grounds and government-reserved lands. She promised to reorganise and transform the markets, including the Juba Town Mall modern market and Malakia Bari Market.

Flora pledged the council’s commitment to ensuring the security situation in Juba City is safe and appropriately handled.

“We will protect the ongoing development projects. Crackdown on niggas, Toronto’s and robbers and consolidate security operations through timely response and the conduct of informed security meetings,” she emphasised.

The Chairperson of the Juba City Legislative Council, Dina Keji, said the legislators will coordinate with the city council to ensure things are done in a proper manner.

“We, the administration body, remain to work tirelessly to put the same things together with the support of Juba City Council executive leadership under the leadership of her worship Flora Gabriel Modi, Mayor of Juba City Council and her deputies,” Keji expressed.

She cited the launch of the Juba City Strategic Plan for January to December 21, 2024, as one of the achievements made by the legislators during the recess.

However, Keji noted inadequate funding as one of the challenges facing the Juba City Council Legislative Assembly.
