Prague – Downtown

Downtown Prague is where to find the true feel of this city, which is and always has been a crossroads of cultures and styles. In this heritage zone, the past and present shake hands over a café table on the airy outdoor terracing of old ‘pavlatsche’ buildings and the unique spirit of Prague is instilled in its secluded nooks with their picturesque wine bars and galleries teeming with works by local artists.

Experience the centre of Prague as just your kind of place for meeting up with old friends or for the ad-hoc making of new friends, by getting to know Praguers over a glass of wine or a freshly drawn foamy-headed beer. Listen to their tips, as well as the stories that are told and lived right here, and cast your mind back to them later, reminiscing with a classy keepsake made by local artists.

So as not to get completely lost in Prague’s courtyards, gardens and hideaways, take a bird’s eye view for a while, looking down at downtown Prague – be it from the Belvedere Royal Summer Palace by the castle, from Letná Park, from Prague Castle itself or from the Old Town Hall. Its tower viewing gallery, 41 metres up, is accessible not only by taking the stairs, but also by futuristic elevator.

Once you your feet back on solid ground again, why not hop onto historic tram line 42, on a circuit around the most magical places in downtown Prague.  Douglas Adams, in his legendary Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, wrote that 42 is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. This we can neither confirm, or deny. But the tram with this number is definitely the answer to many questions about the wonders of Prague.

From the island of Žofín you can take a boat ride under the arches of the Charles Bridge and then  take a funicular rail car to the top of Petřín hill. Countless routes cris-cross the centre of Prague. Take them to Náplavka embankment or to the CAMP – Centre for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning, or to the Manifesto. The centre is Prague’s own heart, and will surely win over yours.
