Mindfulness is an evidence-based method for reducing stress and anxiety, enhancing resilience, and maintaining mental well-being. Even short meditations can turn a bad day around, ground us in the present moment, and help us approach life with gratitude and kindness. This mindfulness book was created by the founder of One Mind Dharma. He developed these 75 essential exercises to offer practical guidance for anyone who wants to realize the benefits of being more mindful.

This meditation book includes:

  • EVIDENCE-BASED ADVICE: Find expert advice on dealing with distorted or wandering thoughts and how to handle mental blocks.

  • MEDITATIONS THAT GROW WITH YOUR CONFIDENCE: Early meditations in Practicing Mindfulness take just 5 minutes and are highly accessible. As they progress, exercises grow with the reader, building on previous lessons to develop a transformative mindfulness practice.

Cultivate happiness and calm with mindfulness meditations

Mindfulness is a proven method for finding calm and reducing stress. Practical guidance from the founder of One Mind Dharma will help build or enhance an ongoing mindfulness practice.

Stones stacked up onto of one another on the beach.

The Wandering Mind

The natural tendency of the mind is to wander. Even the most accomplished meditators have wandering minds! The brain was designed to process information; it’s just doing its job. Rather than seeing this as a problem, approach it as an opportunity to strengthen your mindfulness. Try to bring forgiveness, curiosity, and patience to these moments, and whenever your mind wanders, bring it back to the breath.

Finding the Breath / Time: 5 minutes

The body is always breathing, and the breath is constantly moving. Your breath is not only the best place to start; it’s a constant you can return to anytime you need a little centering.

In this first practice, you will gently find the breath in the body. There is nothing to figure out, there are no problems to solve, and there’s nothing special you need to do.

Constantly return to your direct experience of the body breathing. You are training the mind to be with one experience without distraction.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Written with great clarity and care, Matthew Sokolov's book is an excellent tutorial in learning how to begin and sustain a mindfulness practice and meditation in one's life.”—Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness and Real Love

"The best thing about
Practicing Mindfulness is that it is practice based. Rather than espousing theories of why we should be mindful, Matthew artfully shows is precisely how. The practices within are clear, easy to learn, and easy to remember. This way we can use them when we need them! I would recommend this book to anyone new to meditation and to those who are experienced meditators."—Darren Littlejohn, author of The 12-Step Buddhist, http://the12stepbuddhist.com

"Habits are difficult to change. Our ways of behaving and thinking become ingrained in our neural networks, and this often causes us to act without forethought or reflection. But there is a space between stimulus and response, and by practicing mindfulness, we can increase the space between the two. This is where Matthew Sockolov's book comes in.
Practicing Mindfulness demystifies mindfulness practice, and is a wonderful—and necessary—addition to existing literature."—Sonnee D. Weedn, Ph.D.

Perfect for therapists!

Perfect for therapists!
This book is the perfect practical guide to meditation and mindfulness! I work as a therapist and I often incorperate mindfulness techniques into my therapy practice. What I like about this book is that I can easily flip to a chapter that is relevant to a client and then guide them through the exercise. It is also so easy to show them the steps so they can go home and practice on their own!I am a meditator myself and I really loved the reminder to practice engaged mindfulness. The whole section on working with mindfulness in daily life was so helpful for reminding me to stay grounded while I am going about my every day tasks. Awesome book and I would definitely recommend it to any other therapist or anyone interested in meditation!

For more than 7 decades I have been a voracious reader. My interests have always been wide and varied from the scientific to the esoteric, from classic literature to westerns, and everything in between. This is why when I saw this 183-page soft cover book (Practicing Mindfulness: 75 essential meditations to reduce stress, improve mental health and find peace in the everyday by Mathew Sockolov) on Amazon I decided to purchase it.

Over the years I have read numerous books on meditation, and I have taken several training courses on related topics. I think this is one of the best books I have read on the subject of meditation techniques. There are lots of reasons I like this book, one of them being the large number of different approaches to practicing meditation techniques. The second is how it explains techniques that take very little time (from 5 minutes to 20 minutes in most sessions) and are easy to practice. The third thing is how many areas you can improve yourself with these simple meditation techniques.

After a brief introduction and an explanation of Mindfulness, there are three detailed sections (Basic mindfulness exercises, everyday mindfulness and mindful moods) that include various types of meditations such as “the mindful body, body awareness, caring for yourself, energizing the mind, cultivating the mind, waking up with awareness, cooling the fire, the strong you” and many others.

This is the kind of book that you may want to keep as a good reference source to try out the various techniques taught in this volume. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is seeking a very simple and effective guide to quick and easy meditation methods.

The meditations each list like 5-10 steps. I think you miss out on a lot of what meditation is for when you just rigidly follow steps. Everyone's meditation journey is different. You might decide you want to meditate on the idea in step 2 for 10 minutes, then you never get to any of the other steps. 75 meditations of 5-10 steps.. just seems overwhelming and time consuming. The present moment is accessible to you now.

A book that uses a different approach for meditation ideas is Eckhart Tolle's "Stillness Speaks". That book is just filled with short phrases or paragraphs about a particular idea that you can meditate on. Also the spiritual teachings in Eckhart's book are much deeper. These kinds of books of aphorisms/sutras are a little more open ended and less restrictive, more suitable as a meditation guide I think.

I might still use this Practicing Mindfulness book if I'm looking to do something different, but I don't think that book seems to be more intended to appeal to the average person and less on spiritual awakening.

I am a mother of three and am constantly on the go. I have never considered meditation because frankly the thought of trying to find a quiet spot to sit for a long period of time by myself in complete silence seemed insane I cant even go to the bathroom by myself lol. However I did want to find more peace in my life and that's when someone had mentioned mindfulness. So I started reading this book not knowing what to expect. Honestly I assumed I wouldn't understand half the stuff in it as I've never tried anything like this and thought you'd have to be like a Buddhist level to truly understand it. When I began reading I was super excited! Not only is this book extremely easy to read and comprehend it's easy to navigate. Depending on the emotion your trying to work through you can simply look up the exercise for it! Also since the exercises are short and range from 5-15 minutes they are perfect for my busy schedule. The best part of all you can do them just about anywhere. I've caught my self doing some of the exercises in this book while sitting in my car waiting for my kids to come out of karate practice!

So if your new to this and want an easy to read go to guide on how to better handle your emotions that works with your busy schedule then this is the book for you!!!

I got a refund on this book because really it's just sub-par. The content is not bad per say but would have been better suited to a blog post/ series.
The book just gives you ideas of things to meditate on. So yep not great and having page of paper with 5 sentences is a waste of a perfectly good tree
