Penang cops detain senior citizen in connection with missing five-year-old girl case


KEPALA BATAS: Police have detained a senior citizen in connection with the case of a five-year-old girl from Taman Kuala Muda, Penaga here, who went missing on Friday (May 26) but was found with injuries one day later.

North Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Asri Shafie said the suspect, who is in his 70s, was detained at 10.30pm on Tuesday (May 30) night.

"The suspect lived in the same neighbourhood as the girl," he said.

ACP Mohd Asri said the suspect has been remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.

ACP Mohd Asri said the girl is currently receiving treatment at Kepala Batas Hospital.

He said police had yet to record the girl's statement as she was still traumatised by the incident and Welfare Department personnel were also monitoring the girl.

He said police are still investigating the case and waiting for the full medical report on the girl.

It is learnt that the girl was reported missing from her house on Friday (May 26) and was found near a bush at Permatang Keriang, about two kilometres away from her house at about 6pm on Saturday (May 27).

The girl had bruises on her chest and body as well as an injured jaw and a wound on her chin.
