Overall Synopsis: Episodes 7-9, restructured to unify the trilogy and, of course, remove Rey’s Palpatine lineage.
Running Time 5h7m

My editing source for the first two movies are the amazing Hal9000 Edits. The last movie edits were was only assisted by user "jonH" an "poppasketti" on OriginalTrilogy.com (Thanks jonh and poppasketti, your work is amazing!) for a couple shots, which really helped nail what I was going for.

Main overall changes:

Kylo’s character arc is pretty well fleshed out already, the most cohesive character arc of the ST, imo.

Rey needs to stay a nobody. And she slowly discovers her powers. She does not hit a stormtrooper with her first shot with a blaster, and she has been de-powered along the way as much as possible. Eventually, Ren admits she has power like Palpatine, but that is the most that is alluded to. She is just a special “nobody.”

Poe’s character arc is nowhere near as complex as Kylo, but pretty much laid out for us.

Admittedly, Finn kinda disappears in the final fight – too many absurd parts to leave him in (no horses on spaceships in this cut.) Overall he now is NOT force sensitive, This means he does not ever make and successful attacks with the lightsaber as well. Only once does he ask Rey about a boyfriend, from then on he keeps friendship motivations. He's all about "togetherness" in the end.

Characters like Hux and Rose have been severely sidelined as they just do not have satisfying character arcs. Both simply fade out of importance in the final movie, but I hope I have not made it too obvious. Hux is no spy, simply muscled out by other power hungry commanders. I loved Rose in TLJ, but without adequate character development in TROS, it was best to minimize her to simply a person helping Finn on HIS character arc. Consequently, the scenes at Canto Bight are greatly reduced, and Rose and Finn simply do not pilot speeders at the battle of Crait.

Video specs: H.264, 1920x1080, 23.976 fps.
Audio specs: Stereo (Using 5.1 as source but too many silent center channel moments.)

In my opinion, the end matters most - Thats why I started there. Kylo has redemption in death, Rey kills resurrected Palpatine, and the Galaxy shows up FINALLY to help out and defeat an oppressive force. Anything else was expendable.

Change List Specific to TROS:

· Recut Kylo on Mustafar to seem like he's just murding people and is nuts. Doesn't need to find the wayfinder, he already has it.

· Replaced footage of Snoke in the cloning tanks with Palpatine in the cloning tanks (thanks poppasketti)

· Removed Palpatine’s line about creating Snoke and being all the voices in his head.

· Removed his promise of a fleet. The motivation for Kylo to align is simply vanity, about truly becoming the next Vader.

· Removed plotline about Rey connecting with all the past Jedi.

· Edited down Rey’s training, removing Leia training her all altogether.

· Added future Palpatine shots to Rey’s vision during training

· Removed the notorious ‘lightskipping” scenes all together

· Edited Rebels discussion to remove mention of a Sith fleet and to lean into the cloning angle.

· Removed Rey and Leia’s discussion about leaving. (too forced, sorry Leia. You do best when you just die in this one, you kinda gave Poe command at the Battle of Crait)

· Removed lines with Hux and Kylo about the Mask.

· Removed General Pryde’s defense of the sith cult.

· Removed some of the Pasaana scenes and removed the child asking Rey’s name. (we get it!)

· Removed Pasaana Storm trooper chase

· Removed Worm Force Healing

· Removed Kylo’s ship exploding.

· Removed reveal of Chewbacca on another transport.

· Removed mention that R2 units can restore C3PO’s memory

· Removed Zorii storyline.

· Removed Rey’s mention to shoot the cameras on the star destroyer (really? Only now, after 2 movies?)

· Removed Hux spy plotline.

· Reduced Kylo and Rey’s Force discussion and battle.

· Re-edited Rey to say she only sees herself on the Sith Throne

· Reduced almost all of the Jannah storyline

· Removed Finn and Jannah chasing Rey onto the Death Star

· Re-edited Leia to simply be dying, and to calling out to Kylo as her last effort – not the intent to stop Kylo in order to let Rey kill him, Leia never gave up hope.

· Re-edited Kylo and Rey Death star fight to remove Rey stopping Kylo’s lightsaber with the force

· Re-edited Kylo hearing Leia, dropping his saber and Rey stabbing him to be quicker and to feel like Rey quickly took advantage of the situation before realizing how dark that was.

· Removed Kijimi PLANET exploding, implied that only the city was destroyed.

· Re-edit Rebel discussion to remove “planet-killing star destroyers”

· Removed force ghost Luke catching lightsaber.

· Moved Leia Jedi training montage to previous movie.

· Removed force ghost Luke straining to raise his X-Wing.

· Added subtitle to cult chants “Assembled flesh, rise again!” (my most questionable of all edit choices, imo)

· Removed Palpatine needing Rey to Strike him down. Left part about Palpatine moving to her body if she does.

· Removed all mention of Rey being a Palpatine again

· Removed Ben being tossed down the hole.

· Reordered to have Ben save Rey after they are both struck down by Palpatine. Used 4k footage to crop out the lightsabers in the shot that would affect continuity. Added lightning flashes and sith cult chants in the background.

· All Finn and Jannah storylines in the final fight have been removed (no horses on spaceships)

· Removed “I am all the sith” and “I am all the jedi” chat, its really as simple as a revived Rey kicks a weak Palpatine’s ass. Added some force ghosts to help her.

· Added games scene on the Falcon with Chewie, Poe and Finn to Tatooine arrival and falcon departing Tatooine shot (thanks Hal9000)

· Added Ben to final force ghost vision (thanks jonH)

· Removed Rey’s new lightsaber reveal, and the interaction with the old woman on Tatooine...

Duel Of The Fates is a terrible title in the grand scheme of things.  Especially after how Dave explained what Duel Of The Fates meant in The Phantom Menace.  Duel Of The Fates is essentially the battle for Anakins soul.  Has NOTHING to do with TST.  It is probably best not using this title given how important it is for Anakin & not Rey & anyone else.  Duel Of The Fates might as well be ANAKINS THEME

While I'm satisfied with the films as they are, I find myself immensely curious in seeing how this plays out. I didn't read the full cutlist, I want to be surprised. I look forward to watching this!

Great feedback, thank you!
Any ideas for a name for the full sequel trilogy?

All great ideas, thank you. They seem more about the TROS story than the overall character arcs of Kylo and Rey, which seems like the more important plot of the Trilogy.

Any ideas for not focused on Palps at all?

The last one was supposed to reflect both Ren and the Emperor but if you want to be more specific about Ren and Rey how about:

Scions of Skywalker
Path of the Jedi

Or how about a play on Episode 4's title A New Hope:

An Old Fear

It alludes to the return of Palatine, Luke isolating because of his mistakes and the idea that fear is the path to the dark side a path which Ren is already on and Rey is skirting.

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.

On a side note I always felt episode 8 and episode 7 should be flipped. The story would see the resistance being attacked and hounded by the first order before ultimately fleeing and fighting back and destroying star killer base. Snoke dies in the first film and then returns (because he's a clone) in the second while the second foreshadows the return of the emperor. It would allow Rey to be a new pupil and Ren to be an ex pupil of Luke's. At some point I'll try this out. It also allows you to significantly trim the ninth film. Maybe even use star killer base and Hans death are big beats to end on and skip the Emperor all together. Idk.

That would be awesome!! If you could figure a way to cut out Palps, that would probably be the best cut ever. Hal9000 was able to move the starkiller base plot in TFA way better than I could have ever imagined, and what you are talking about seems even more complex!

But I would be the first to watch!

Well I'm not planning on attempting that anytime soon but you never know. I do think the flipped structure would also benefit characterisation. For example Poe; he's much more arrogant in The Last Jedi than he was in The Force Awakens so that would show growth. Potentially you could skip Fin entirely in Episode 8 and have him shine as a defector later on especially as he helps save a hero we know and are invested in.

The Phantom Menace is already a play on A New Hope. If Luke and his Jedi were the New Hope, Palpatine and his sith were the Phantom Menace.

Working on a final review. Now that Hal9000's TROS edit is done, I have added in some great final FX edits from that - not much, but there is some great stuff there. Also had a good list of notes from reddit feedback that I have been meaning to review and consider. (a word here, a frame there)

I also took the advice of revel911 on another thread
revel911 said:
Would be cool to implement his suggestions to showing not telling:

Gave the movie a FULL dialogue audit, and ended up removing over 10 12 more minutes and tightened things up even more. Lots of narration or exposition removed. If it's explained once? That's enough.

This was great advice. Thanks revel911

Glad you found that link from another thread as it really is a crutch of the series.

Have you looked at moving Palpatine up earlier movies as well or at least the mention of Palpatine up so the transition from Snoke to Palpatine isn't as abrasive? Even if it's talk or announcements or something ...

As to TFA, I wish there was a way to combine Kylo hiding his face until he meets his father as Digimodification does with the pushback of Starkiller base as Hal9000 does. That to me is the perfect TFA edit.

Great thought. On the side, I have actually already cut the Kylo/Palps scene into two, with the first half not using Kylo's face (scar issues) so it can be placed earlier in the edit. To have enough content though, the second half requires mention of the final order fleet almost being ready, which doesn't really suit the current Palps motivation (less Emperor and Empire-focused, more Sith-focused). But I can re-adjust the back half story if I need to make it work.

The problem I have right now though, is finding a suitable earlier spot to add it to. Everything I have tried seems to diminish the character arc of Kylo overcoming Snoke for him own reasons. Right now, Palps seems like a symbolic character arc "McGuffin", to allow Kylo to confront his need to be the next Vader, which was a character motivation from the beginning. And Palps, in the end, is setting a trap to get a (non-relative) similar force user to use as a new body. As soon as Palps is revealed earlier, Snoke seems less important and Kylo seems less autonomous and more of a puppet of Palps.

But like you mention- it doesn't have to be that scene, it could be talk or announcements... So I took the Rey route - I have peppered in shots of Palps and the Sith throne to all her visions, including when she first touches Luke's lightsaber. This will hopefully foreshadow her impending confrontation in a way that is less abrasive when he finally does appear. She sees her dark path from the beginning. (Kylo tells her "You have HIS power." She's not a blood relative, but she's got the same Palps "lighting fingers" version of the Force in her.)

I agree that Dig did a great job with this. In the perspective of TFA alone, the benefits here are awesome, creating a much more imposing villian. One thing that worked well in Dig's edit is that the parentage reveal was also revealed at the same time - double whammy.

I took a look again at that edit today while giving mine another review and considered it, but am ultimately deciding against it for mine, but thank you for the great idea. It is always good to consider everything first, rather than wish I had later.

For me in this longer edit, his face reveal will ultimately be inevitable, but his connection (or lack thereof) to his parents are one of the most important parts of his character arc. I would need to trim away some of Han and Leia's depth as parents to be able to pull the double whammy Dig did, and I think that showing as much as possible of Han wanting to love his son adds to the emotional pull of his "memory ghost" at the end, making it as poignant as possible.

On a side note, I wasted the whole day doing another technical audit of the latest version and ended up removing another three minutes of "show dont tell". A five hour epic edit was fun when the pandemic first started, but I forgot how much it sucks to review a five hour film for technical quality. One more tomorrow. I always hope it will be the last one and I wont see anything else to fix, but that is rarely the case.

*Update - Only a few more changes LOL. Show, don't tell.  V2 is complete.
