PUTRAJAYA: Electricity consumers in Peninsular Malaysia will enjoy existing and possibly even lower tariff rates for the next six months effective July 1.

However, high-consumption domestic users whose current monthly electricity bill is at least RM708 will see a minimum 25% increase in charges.

National Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said up to 99% of domestic consumers, those who have a monthly electricity consumption rate of 1,500 kWh or below, will not experience any increase.

He said non-domestic consumers in the low-voltage tariff category, and specifically the agricultural tariff, would not see an increase in their bills and the Imbalance Cost-Pass-Through (ICPT) surcharge at a rate of 3.7 sen/kWh would be maintained.

“In other words, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) including restaurants, retail shops, bakeries, small workshops, farmers, livestock breeders, planters and similar businesses will also not experience any increase in electricity tariffs,” he told a press conference here on Friday (June 23).

Nik Nazmi said high-consumption domestic users were 1% or about 83,000 out of all consumers.

He said those whose current bill exceeds RM708 a month would be subjected to a surcharge of 10 sen/kWh.

“These users will experience a minimum monthly increase of RM187.

“The government is still providing a special subsidy of RM58mil for this category since the ICPT surcharge is not fully waived,” he said.

Nik Nazmi said those who were affected were consumers with high electricity usage and not necessarily those in the high-income group.

A new category of non-domestic consumers, namely state water and sanitation operators, would have reduced surcharge rates from 20 sen/kWh to 3.7 sen/kWh.

“Water operators under the state governments will enjoy lower surcharges from July to December.

“This decision is in line with the government’s efforts to improve the capacity and capability of water operators in providing treated and clean water to consumers,” he added.

Medium-voltage and high-voltage consumers from the industrial and commercial sector will enjoy a reduction in surcharge rates from 20 sen/kWh to 17 sen/kWh.

“This means these users will enjoy a monthly decrease in electricity bills ranging from 28% to 35%,” he added.
