Approaches that seemed like good ideas at the time can turn out to be long-lasting mistakes, while the simple passage of time means that no strategy will work forever. Cities need to be constantly innovating in response to changing populations and economic conditions." I agree wholeheartedly with this, and I think there are a lot of untapped opportunities to engage the public through public dialogue and other means to create space for their thoughts and perspectives to be included in decision-making progress. There is also an untapped opportunity for cities to use their institutions to help build up the civic health of their communities beyond advisory boards and adhering to the required community meetings when a new development in the community comes into question. Community based partnerships with folks that are rooted in community, inclusive of those are and are not the usual suspects will be key to reinvention and creating better solutions.

A central goal in establishing the Louisville Economic Development Alliance is to build an organization that will continue to lead economic development across mayoral administrations and to bring business, not-for-profit, and education to the table to spur greater economic growth. There are great examples in other cities where public and private entities have joined together to attract billions in new investment in both economic and community development projects.

Two community councils in the south of Aberdeenshire are the first to submit Local Place Plans which gather ideas, highlight issues and express their communities’ aspirations for the future of their place. Newtonhill, Muchalls & Cammachmore and Stonehaven & District community councils have each created their localised plans for consideration into the Aberdeenshire Local Development Plan process following lengthy community engagement. You can view the plans here: https://lnkd.in/es7cqPKh  The ‘live’ documents describe the needs, hopes and aspirations for the communities living within the various settlement boundaries. Local Place Plans give communities an opportunity to work up proposals for the development and use of land in the place where they live and offer the opportunity for a community-led, but collaborative approach to local place-making, setting out proposals for the development and use of land. Forming a key part of the Scottish Government’s new planning reform, the scheme has been introduced to increase community involvement in the planning and spatial design process. The aim of the provisions is to significantly enhance engagement in development planning, effectively empowering communities to play a proactive role in defining the future of their places. Both the Newtonhill, Muchalls & Cammachmore and Stonehaven Local Place Plans provide comment on a wide range of topics including sustainability and design, planning and development, jobs, tourism and the economy, education, transportation, the environment and health and wellbeing. LPPs can be specific to a single place or building or cover a wider geographic area, but need to be registered with Aberdeenshire Council which is legally required to make them publicly available. They can be created by communities to highlight planning and spatial design issues, and propose the development or use of land, but can also identify land and buildings which the community body considers to be of particular significance to the area. Cradle to Career created a multidisciplinary team at Wirral Council to work together towards the community's goals - based together in a local centre. It's meant faster interventions, more trust and better outcomes. Its success could form the model for a revival of Total Place-style place-based budgets. If you’ve been following us for a while (and if you haven’t, now’s your chance), you’ll know we’re big fans of localism. A key part of localism is involving communities in setting priorities. Take Hastings District Council, for instance. They see community planning as “the voice of the people.” In their community plan, residents work together to agree on what needs to be done, who’s responsible, and when it should happen. With council backing, these plans steer decisions from the council and other key players. The Maraekākaho Community Plan is a great example. It sets a vision for Maraekākaho as a strong, connected rural community. It outlines new projects and focuses on creating a hub that links the area’s past with its future, ensuring the community thrives both socially and economically. These community-led plans provide a roadmap for real action. By feeding into the council’s planning and funding, as well as influencing other stakeholders and partners, they ensure the community's vision becomes reality. This is localism in action, where locals lead the way in creating their future by design.

Neasden Civic Partnership Programme Following last year’s announcement that Neasden will receive Mayor of London Civic Partnership Programme funding, Brent Council Cabinet today approved £10.5m investment into public realm, community programming, highways and environmental improvements, to revitalise Neasden Town Centre. Brent Council matching Mayoral funding with Community Infrastructure Levy investment for local infrastructure, regeneration and growth. Neasden Civic Partnership Programme will support an area that has suffered longstanding inequalities. The opportunity is to re‑establish socioeconomic and environmental links that have been lost between the historic town centre and local communities, so that existing and new communities together find in Neasden a place where everyone can belong and thrive. Thank you to Rumi Bose for coming into present on the extensive community engagement work and collaboration with local residents, businesses and communities, who with Sanchez Benton Architects produced the Neasden Town Centre Action Plan, setting out the vision for change for Neasden that forms the basis of the programme of interventions. Regeneration Manager Anna Doyle must now build on the excellent work of Bruna Varante and Rubie Charalambous, continue engagement and collaboration with local residents, businesses and the diversity of community groups (including the Neasden Business Collective) and move forward into detailed design, planning and delivery of this ambitious programme over the next four years.
