📚📊 A new study from Oxford University reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic hasn't impacted reading proficiency among 9–10-year-olds in England - https://lnkd.in/eU238eZD Despite most countries showing a downward trend in reading achievement since 2016, England's results remained consistent and above the international average. The research further points to a narrowing gender gap in reading. While the study didn't precisely measure the impact of COVID-19, it suggests that the recovery efforts in England have successfully supported pupils' reading skills. This underscores the importance of educational resources in maintaining academic performance. Enhance your school's learning environment by exploring Juniper Education Group's Education Resource Service. One of my core beliefs is in the use of high-quality literature as a vehicle for the teaching of reading and writing. The human psyche has always been hardwired for stories, and this is particularly true for children. Contextualising reading and writing within a vehicle text not only models and inspires children to read for pleasure, but it also ties writing strategies and concepts together in a meaningful body of knowledge that children will carry with them whenever they think of that text or author. Key findings on this approach: - Children make an additional 6 months progress in reading and writing. - Achievement gap between boys and girls is significantly narrowed. - Achievement gap between advantaged and disadvantaged children is significantly narrowed. - Children taught with this approach choose to read more often, at greater length and are more confident in talking about books.

The DfE's reading framework If you've not seen this document, it may be well worth digging into if you're interested in, or lead on, developing children's reading in primary or secondary schools. It really is a gold mine of evidence-based insights into developing reading, illustrated with case studies and good practice. There's sure to be something here to support most schools who are reflecting on their strategies to promote pupils' reading. First published in 2021, it was updated in September 2023 and has the status of non-statutory guidance in the UK. https://lnkd.in/dFXsTE8X
