Cataclysmic - By Maxine Hartnell
Opening Friday 19 April, 5pm.

Step into the surreal world of "Cataclysmic," where Maxine Hartnell's obsession with all things feline takes centre stage, defying gravity and embarking on journeys.

Maxine Hartnell draws inspiration from the realm of pop surrealism and symbolism, transporting viewers to a strange and whimsical world where unusual fairytale narratives come to life. She has a passion for nurturing young minds and is a core Children's Art teacher at the Quarry Arts Centre and through "Just Imagine" Art Classes for Kids.

Opening Friday 19 April, 5pm.
Duration: 19 April - 18 May.
Matariki / Puanga
Group Exhibition with 20+ artists
Curated by Lenny Murupaenga and in partnership with Creative Northland.

The Matariki / Puanga celebration gathers artists from diverse disciplines to create artworks inspired by the Maori New Year. These creations reflect the essence of Matariki / Puanga, focusing on the end of the previous year and the anticipation of the new one.

Themes of harvest, the acknowledgement of those who have passed on, Whanau, Hapu and the sharing & caring of Matauranga Maori are central, symbolizing a time for reflection, connection, and renewal within the community.

Opening: Friday 31 May, 5pm
Duration 5 weeks
Closing Saturday 6 July, 4:30pm
The Creative CUP!

The 2024 Quarry Annual Fundraiser will take the form of Cups and Mugs this year! The exhibition will be on for 3 weeks, with the final week being auction week.

As with the Great Plate this is an opportunity for the Quarry community to gift back to the Centre, submitting work to help fundraise for key infrastructure. Participants can either make their own cup/mug, or Marilyn Wheeler, Julie Cromwell and Anabelle McCusker have made cups for artists to beautify. These have a small $5 donation to contribute to clay and firing costs.

To be part of this fundraiser, either as an artist, or a volunteer behind-the-scenes message creative@quarryarts.org to find out more.

Last day for Cup/Mug submissions: Saturday 6 July
Exhibition Opens Friday 12 July
Auction: Saturday 27 July - Friday 3 August
Closing Auction Party: Friday 3 August

We are looking for volunteers to help make this event happen, Those interested in helping behind-the-scenes please contact creative@quarryarts.org

Learn Onggi

Renowned Korean ceramic artist, Kwak Kyungtae, will be teaching a four day workshop at the Quarry Arts Centre in July.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn these skills in New Zealand.
All places need to be filled for the workshop to go ahead, so if you are keen go for it!

Onggi is a unique traditional method for coil building large pots and forms. There are only a handful of Onggi masters left in Korea.

You will be taught how to make coils, flatten the base of the pot, and coil the clay using the “Taryeom” method. Master Kwak will demonstrate how to paddle the form and shape it, giving you a newfound sense of volume and proportion on a large scale.

See Kwak's Instagram for inspiration! @

Studio Artists
Quarry Arts Centre Studio Artists Amorangi Hikuroa and Rosy & Rich (along with Teresa HR Lane), are heading to the 2024 Aotearoa Art Fair 18-21 April, proudly presented by Megan Dickinson Gallery.

“Sharing a rich and diverse connection to place and united by their deep sense of responsibility towards environmental preservation… the Uku works by Hikuroa, Collage works by Lane and Ceramic works by Rosy & Rich collectively underscore the urgency of protecting our environment whilst highlighting the interwoven relationship between art and nature,” says Dickinson.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Tai Tokerau artists to be celebrated at New Zealand’s premier contemporary art event, giving national and international exposure. All the best, Amo, Rosy & Rich!

Dave Taylor is at the Ngakau Carving Symposium for the next two weeks, joined by many carvers from around Aotearoa. Hosted and supported by Te Kura o te Kauaeranga Thames South School, this brings together professional and emerging artists with a passion for whakairo, working with kohatu (stone) and rakau (wood). The public are welcome to view and even join in. All funds raised will go back into the school for extra-curricular activities for its tamariki.
