I, Bionic

“Once again, Jess K. Hardy delivers the space romance I didn't know I needed."

- Ruby Barrett, author of Hot Copy and The Romance Recipe

A BILLION STARS, TWO HEARTS, ONLY ONE CAVE.

Half-human Elanie's life aboard the interstellar pleasure cruise, the Ignisar, is changed forever when she installs her LunaCorp hormone upgrade. Seeking answers, she’s thrown into the path of the ship's handsome but curt physician, Sem, an empath from the ocean planet Portis. When a mysterious voice hacks Elanie's programming and forces her to jump through space, Sem follows her to the edges of the Known Universe.
Stranded on an uncharted planet, they become unlikely allies fighting to survive deadly blizzards, arctic ice caves, and a mysterious hedonistic community, all while navigating their unexpected and tumultuous feelings for each other.

Set against the backdrop of a deep space pleasure cruise through a neighboring solar system, this steamy, emotional, heart-pounding series is perfect for fans of Honey Phillips and Ruby Dixon.

Content notes/tropes: Teacher/student, oblivious to feels, high stakes bonding.

“I, Bionic takes us from deep space to an only-one-cave adventure on a Hoth-like ice planet to a Bacchanalic paradise full of secrets. The adventure kept me turning the page but it was the romance that made me want it to never end, hitting some of my favourite tropes: idiots to lovers, sex lessons, and forced proximity. Hardy is expert at creating a cast of found family who would do anything for each other and makes it easy to root for a happy ending for all.“

Move over, IPB! There's a new blue alien in town!

I absolutely lost it over this delicious, funny, steamy SFF Romcom. And when I say romcom, I MEAN ROMCOM! Hardy is HILARIOUS, and there were so many times I cried laughing. The romance was delicious, from the meet-cute, to OH GOD WHAT ARE FEELINGS, steamy stirrings in the underpants region, flirting via karaoke, the trope of all tropes in the form of Only One Cave, and falling in sweet, sweet love, annoying pets and all. But Hardy doesn't just skim the surface in this story, she dives all the way in.

Between space adventures and sexy romps, there's serious depth in the way she deals with colonization, worker rights, autonomy, and labor practices. Jorts the Cat would approve all the way, and I never thought I'd cry because of a Britney Spears metaphor about being the boss of your own fate, your own body, but there were tears!

If you're a fan of scruffy nerfherders like Han Solo, this one's for you. If you sing Britney Spears songs in the shower and rallied for her freedom, this one is for you. If you've ever, ever looked at your own private parts and thought why is this stuff sexy, this book is for you. If you've ever, ever, EVER wanted to escape to paradise with a hot doctor/mechanic and divulge in delicious food and make love under the stars and adopt a pet together and... well, you get the idea.

I loved this book. I love the world, I loved the characters, I loved the writing, I loved the humor, I loved the steam, I love the human chaos of feelings and morality even though neither of the main characters are human. I will read this again and again.

This book is out of this world! Seriously though, I loved it. It has everything you want from a romance novel: love, heartache, and a delicious amount of spice and at the heart of the story are the two main characters, Elanie and Sem. Oh, my Saints! I adore both of them.

Elanie is very much an AI with a direct manner and approach to everything, including sex, whereas Sem is warm, friendly and approachable. Fantastic quality to have as he is the ship, Dr Lol
This dynamic makes for some of the best parts.
Poor Sem is trying to control his emotions around Elanie. Elanie, on the other hand, is oblivious to the effect she has on him. It is so cute.

I loved watching how their relationship developed. What I love the most is how Elanie evolves. Sem’s empathic nature brings out the more human side to Elanie, giving her a newfound warmth.
And on top of their budding new romance, there is action, drama and a dream planet that is not all it appears to be!

Hilarious flirty banter. Incredible world-building. Fantastic and loveable characters. And a unique and beautiful storyline.

One final thing to add, I LOVE Mal. Simple. You will know why once you have read this stellar book.

Read as a standalone, but you know I’m travelling back through space (or just heading to Amazon) to get book 1 of the Ignisar series.

Thank you so much, Jess, for the arc ebook. It was a pleasure to read (in many ways. lol)

It is out TODAY.

Oops, she did it again! (read the book before you impart judgment) Jess K. Hardy has come out with another absolute BANGER of a book, and I would like to officially pledge my undying love and devotion to all things Ignisar.

Seriously, I can't believe what a blast this book was. The instant that I found out the second book in the Ignisar series would be following Elanie's story, I literally squealed with joy. A gorgeous, blunt, won't-take-your-shit bionic who just got a hormone upgrade and starts feeling...feelings? Sign. me. up.

And who better to guide Elanie through the confusing paths of her newfound sexuality than Dr. Semson - the blue-skinned alien of my wet dreams (Ice Planet Barbarians, who?).

This delectable story has it all - love, adventure, humor, and slow-burn spice that is... *fans self* the slowest, most decadent of burns. Sexual frustration, thy name is Sem. Not to mention the imaginative sci-fi elements that are just the cherry on top of this masterpiece.

These books deserve so much more recognition; I can't even believe how much I love them. I'm confident that any other book in this series will be added to my favorites shelf. So, if you're reading this, I implore you to pick up these books. You won't regret it.

Thank you, NetGalley and City Owl Press, for the ARC!

Sci-fi? Check. Romance? Check. Scenes that make you just want to burst out laughing? Check!

The conversations that occur between Sem and Elainie were hilarious to read. Elainie's first doctor appointment with Sem was the highlight of the book for me, I could read that scene over and over. I kind of like the fact that Sem was interested in her from the start but he didn't try to force anything and that he put Elainie first. Some books' endings are so predictable but Bionic's ending was not, and it was a HEA that left me feeling happy.

There are parts of the book that I would go back and read again but I gave the book 3 stars because I wouldn't read the whole book through if I read it again. I would probably skip to the parts I liked.

I, Bionic delivers everything a sci-fi romance lover needs: laugh out loud humor, great relationship growth and sexual tension, steamy love scenes, aliens, adventure, and more! Elanie and Sem have fantastic chemistry, and their dynamic kept me reading from the get-go. The Ignisar cruise ship is a debauched wonder all on its own. Each colorful (sometimes literally!) character made me want to read more stories set in this world, and the satisfying is sure to please. Five stars!

WELCOME BACK TO THE IGNISAR!

Elanie and Sem's story was bonkers fun to write. I, Bionic was my covid book, my break from reality, my nearly nonsensical need to find something joyful during such a bleak time. The theme of self-actualization through time off arose, quite hysterically, from not having a single day off in nearly four weeks while the nursing facility where I work dealt with a massive outbreak. I was losing who I was, becoming a person who went to work, stayed numb and terrified for 12-15 hours, came home, slept, went to work, on repeat. Elanie was my outlet, my reminder that this wouldn't be forever. And Sem was just the scruffy-looking nerf herder to help her find her way out, even if he did have to swim through a pipe barely big enough to fit him to do it.

I hope you love this second installment of the Ignisar series as much as I do! Carry on, crew!

Thanks to NetGalley and City Owl Press for allowing me access to this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I, Bionic begins just after the end of Love in the Time of Wormholes, the first Ignisar book, but it can be read as a standalone as most of the key players are introduced or reintroduced at the start of the book. I would recommend reading the first book either way because Jess K Hardy's blend of drama and humor is truly thoroughly enjoyable.

That said this story picks up where the last left off where Elaine, a bionic, think half human half machine, has decided to get her hormone upgrade which opens her world to numerous pleasure but also means she's going through robot puberty.

Sunny suggests that she goes to see the ship physician, Sem, who happens to be a blue empath from the planet Portis who have the reputation of hating bionics because they can't get a read of their emotions, so it feels like they're interacting with television static.

As Sem blunders his way through explaining the changes that Elaine is experiencing due to his growing attraction to her a mystery is unfolding on the ship that seems to be hacking into bionics and overriding their functions.

I really enjoy how Jess K Hardy adds a pinch of mystery to her stories, it's woven through in such a way that enhances the main plot without upstaging the romance and it's a good thing because Elaine's cluelessness and Sem's crush is adorable to watch.

I, Bionic meets up seamlessly with the events in Love in the Time of Wormholes. Again, we’re on the space pleasure cruise ship, The Ignisar, but this time Jess K. Hardy introduces us to Elanie, the loveable but uptight bionic who is Sunny’s assistant and friend. There’s a new mystery afoot on the The Ignisar, tied to larger unrest in the Wormholes world, and complicating matters, Elanie has upgraded her hormones package, and is unsure how to navigate her strange, but wonderful new body. Enter empathic (and gorgeous) Portisan Dr. Semson, who Sunny enlists to guide Elanie through bionic puberty. Cue hilarious conflicts and misunderstandings, an unexpected twist you won’t see coming, and all the alien steam and spice you could ask for, plus a nice dose of healthy romantic relationships and sweetness. (It’s Ice Planet Barbarians without the cringe-worthy parts).
If you loved Wormholes, you’ll enjoy I, Bionic just as much. Revisit characters you’ve come to know and love, and fall in love with new ones. Snappy, readable prose, all the feels, humor and fun on every page, this book is a steamy and adventurous continuation of the series, further developing the world Hardy has created, upping the stakes for the future of The Ignisar. I, Bionic is accessible and genre-bending Sci-Fi Romance at its best.

Quick(ish) Review

I, Bionic: Different vibe from the first story in this series, the FMC Elanie is very literal half-human/half bionic going through some changes after a hormonal upgrade and Sem is an empathic MMC doctor who is helping her through it. Then the story veers off course, literally and figuratively but romance still happens. The subplot involving an unseen danger to bionics helps expands the 'verse and brings in some new characters. And just when I was settling more into the action-adventure side of the story, it hit me with a bit of emotional oomph to bring it all together.

Series Overall: OMG I really enjoyed this series, far more than I anticipated tbh. Could I reduce this to a cross between The Love Boat and Star Trek? Yes, but that's just the broad strokes. I love found family scenes and this is a great example of building the characters in each story so I was intrigued with the supporting characters as much as the leads. While I recommend reading the series in order, each book works on its own and that's not as common as you'd think, esp in SFR. The worldbuilding is well done and intriguing, the humor's good and it has just enough emotionally resonant moments that it takes the storytelling to that next level. Very happy I read this and I can't wait to see where it goes next.

Another fantastic sci fi romance from Jess Hardy. I loved this book more than the first in the series, which was also a delight. But this one, featuring feelings-adverse bionic Elanie catching feelings big time for empathetic, blue-skinned ship’s doctor Sem, really stole my heart.

The dynamic between these two is just delicious, with Elanie exploring her sexuality for the first time and Sem trying desperately to hold onto his professional cool. Along with Hardy’s characteristic humor and heart, this romance kept me turning pages to the end. There is a doctor’s office scene that made me stifle laughter to avoid waking my spouse in the middle of the night, a subplot about labor rights for AI, and of course, only one cave.

One of the things I loved in the first Ignisar book was the setting’s sex positivity, and this comes through strongly here as well. Sem is a nurturing and kind male LI who adores Elanie’s strength and supports her self actualization. And the underlying plot involving bionic rights brought interesting world building and new elements to the series. Five enthusiastic stars, no notes, very much looking forward to the next book.

I didn't even realize this was book two in the series until I came over to write this review. So I definitely don't think you NEED to read the first one. I will probably go back and read it though. Anyhoo, Elanie is half human bionic who recently installed a hormone upgrade and is basically going through puberty emotionally/hormonally. Sem is the ships doctor but he comes from a race of empaths and not being able to read Elanie kind of throws him for a loop but he's instantly physically attracted to her (she was designed to be perfect after all).

Hilarity ensues when he tries to explain the changes she's experiencing and relationships of a more intimate nature.

Meanwhile, there is something very strange affecting bionics all across the galaxy. And this is where it veers from rom-com to fairly serious discussion about the rights of bionics and how they are basically treated as slaves and reprogrammed.

But all's well that ends wells.

This is a fairly quick and enjoyable read.

Review originally posted at https://smexybooks.com/2023/02/series... (Reviewed as a series)

The second book in the series focuses on Elanie (Sunny’s BFF) a half-human bionic who from what I can tell is the person who keeps everything together on the Ignisar and the ship’s doctor, Sem.

Elanie finally downloads her hormone update from LunaCorp and realizes she doesn’t recognize her body anymore. Sunny recommends a visit to the doctor on board, and Elanie finally relents and visits Sem, who as an empath finds it hard to treat his new patient since he can’t read her emotions. The fact that he’s super attracted to her doesn’t help either.

This is more of an adventure, coming-of-age type tale. Elanie and Sem find themselves on a frozen planet when Elanie is “called” by a faction of bionics looking for freedom from LunaCorp. They learn to depend on each other and it takes them away from the Dr./Patient relationship and enables them to really get to know each other. I liked Sem’s gentle demeanor and Elanie’s sexual awakening while finding her independence. Their romance was quite lovely.

At this point, I don’t think the author can take a wrong step with anything she writes about the Ignisar or it’s crew. I am utterly and hopelessly in love now. Elanie was the perfect straight-man in Sunny’s book. And that deadpan delivery serves her well throughout her own story as she deals with puberty, first love, and a plot to take over the known universe. I spent so much of this book laughing because Elanie is unflinchingly honest about the changes she’s going through. I felt a bit like an anthropologist looking back on my own “coming of age” through the lens of her story. By the end, I was nearly bawling like a baby to have seen the strides both she and Sem had taken in becoming the people they truly wanted to be. I don’t have a clue what the next run on the Ignisar will bring us, but I’m looking forward to seeing it whatever it is.

I, Bionic
Ignisar, Book 2
by Jess K. Hardy

I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was released 4/7/22 and is available on kindle unlimited. This is the second book in a series and I have not read the first which explains why I felt some gaps in the world building but not so much that I was lost.

Our heroine is a bionic humanoid AI who can have hormonal biological functions but also be wiped clean and rebooted like a computer. Our hero is a blue alien empath who can feel everyone’s feelings except hers. Which of course the challenge only makes her more intriguing to him. He is the sole ships Dr on a futuristic space pleasure cruise and she is one of the staff members. As a bionic she’s essentially a slave and never gets a day off. There was a surprising amount of deep philosophical examining of these sci fi future politics. While steamy this book also offered humor and adventure.

♥️💜🤗 Exceptional !

Elanie looked down at her chest, weighing it, for she had just settled into LunaCorp’s new hormonal program.

Her crewmate Sunny called to invite her to taste some new pastries found on deck 30 of the spacecraft.

Elanie couldn’t take any more of all these sweets, she had gained 6kgs in two months...

--------------

A big crush for this exceptional read !

I was a little taken aback by the beginning of the novel, but I very quickly loved everything : the plot, the sci-fi/romance universe and the two main characters : Elanie and Sem, very touching.

One of the best sci-fi romance novels I’ve ever read !

I wholeheartedly recommend this must-read for fans of the genre.

4.5⭐️

Another fantastic trip to Ignisar (and far beyond), this time with Elanie the bionic, and Sem, the blue-skinned, web-fingered empath doctor.

Hardy is so good at world building, and in such an effortless way. We know just enough about how, say, a bionic works without suffering through a knowledge dump. This world feels real.

She’s also great at dialogue, at making me laugh, and at writing hot and affecting sex scenes.

I loved this equally to Love in the Time of Wormholes, the first book in this trilogy(? Maybe she’ll write more?)

My one gripe is that bringing us along with Sem in the pipe would have been agonizing and thrilling, but we skipped right over it.

Can’t wait for The Princess and the Bruiser.

The fun and mayhem on board the Ignisar, an interstellar pleasure cruiser, continues in this second installment of the amazing romcom scifi by Jess K. Hardy. This author has a talent for making me laugh so suddenly I spit my coffee out and then get all the warm and fuzzy feels at the same time. Elanie and Sim's are the epitome of opposites, her being an unreadable half-human bionic, and him an empath from an ocean planet. The way they come together is nothing short of organic, hillarious, and utterly page turning. Loved it, and I can hardly wait for the next book!

I loved Book 1 in this series, and when I saw Elanie was getting her own book, I am here for it! I loved Elanie's quirky character. Loved the relationship between Shem and Elanie, heart warming and hits all the feels. Can't wait for book 3.

I adored Love in the Time of Wormholes, the first book in this series,so naturally I was really excited for I, Bionic -- and it far exceeded my expectations! I loved it so much!

This romping space romance encompasses everything I love about Jess K. Hardy’s work: it’s funny, creative, and sexy, while encased in a wonderful, sweet, gooey tenderness that makes my heart flutter.

Sem and Elanie are everything!!! Also always, Jess’s characters--in this case, a dreamy blue-skinned doctor and sassy and seriously hot Bionic--are fundamentally kind and caring. Even in the funny ups and downs of their introduction and relationship (including a really hot doctor’s office scene that manages to not blur any ethical/power lines; Britney Spears karaoke; a space-ship wreck; bonding and cuddling (for warmth, of course) in just one cave; amazing, empowering sexual exploration; and lots of adventure), they are kind, forgiving, inquisitive, and generous with one another.

I, Bionic has a perfect balance of world building for me-- enough detail that I feel immersed in the fun world Jess has created on the edges of the Known Universe without hitting me on the head with details I’ll never keep track of. I felt fully grounded in the world(s) of the book, and enjoyed the ride of meeting characters of various species, huge penises and all. The ethical underpinning of the book--discussions about the rights of Bionics--was poignant without getting preachy, and I was rooting for Sem and Elanie from the very beginning.

Jess manages to write my absolute favorite kind of sex scenes: they are SO hot but very safe and tender at the same time. These characters take care of eachother, and it makes everything hotter and sweeter.

Jess has become a “sure thing” author for me--I know I will love anything she does, and I know she’ll take care of me as a reader.

In short, I’d love a billion more books like this--one for every star in the Known Universe, please!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Jess K Hardy is a new-to-me author that I only discovered because of this book being offered as an ARC on BookSirens (for which, thanks, BTW!) but I loved it so much I went straight out an bought the 1st book in the Ignisar series "Love in the Time of Wormholes".

"I, Bionic", the 2nd book in the Ignisar series kicks off with such confidence and tongue-in-cheek aplomb - this author knows exactly what she's doing and you're along for a very fun ride. Sem, being Portisian is an empath and - we learn - because of how Portisian empathy works (which is really clever, IMO) they struggle to be around Bionics. But he's also the only Doctor on board the Ignisar and Elanie - a bionic - is in need of his services because of her recent upgrade into puberty.

In the book, the author teeters on the edge of two uncomfortable nuances. The first, involving the sexual attraction towards someone who has only just entered puberty veers uncomfortably close to sexual attraction of a minor. Thankfully, the characters chart their way through this with appropriate caution and care.

The other - and I suspect I'm showing my age here - is the potential comparison of Thura with South Africa post-Apartheid. Again, I feel this is resolved in a different direction, and quite soon after I even began to become conscious of the pitfall.

All in all, though, this is steamy, fun, gripping and confident. I've seen other reviewers describe Jess K Hardy as an "auto-buy" and I think this is the same for me, henceforth.

Elanie is a half-human bionic and has installed a hormone upgrade which then gives her tumultuous emotions and changing emotions as if she were going through puberty. It is also a little difficult for her as she works in housekeeping on the deep space pleasure cruise, the Ignisar. Seeking help she goes to the ship's handsome doctor Sem who is an empath from the ocean planet Portis. Sem is worried he can't treat her effectively as he can't read her emotions but instead finds himself drawn to her which makes him into a bumbling idiot whenever he sees her. When her programming is hacked by a mysterious voice she hijacks an escape pod to jump through space but Sem follows her to the edges of the known universe. Stranded they must fight to survive deadly blizzards, arctic ice caves, and a secret, hedonistic cult. Coping with their feelings might be harder than escaping back to the Ignisar.

I really enjoyed this story which could give great parallels to real-life along the lines of racial prejudice and bias. It clearly showed that working together and love were perfect mechanisms to move past that and have a happy future. I found that Elanie's confusion was well described and brought back memories of childhood and growing up as humans too. I loved the way that Sem was trying so hard to be professional talking to her but was ending up torturing himself and messing up his words. The descriptions were very clear and easy to understand as were the emotions experienced by them both. I believe that this book is for mature audiences only.

I love Elaine! I really enjoyed her as a background character in the last book so I as really excited to read her story in this book, especially as it’s her exploring who she is and discovering sex. I admit I was a little concerned as patient/caregiver is my least favorite pairing, but Hardy handles this deftly. Sem and Elaine do meet when Elaine goes to him for help with the different way her body is feeling after her hormone upgrade and Sem is quickly enamored with her and struggling to stay professional, but he answers her questions and once she’s satisfied she ends their relationship as a doctor and a patient. Of course this is only the start of their friendship and attraction to each other. I love how Elaine is enamored with Earth culture, especially how that contributed to pop culture references that added a levity to the more serious plot. The worldbuilding in this book not only touched on bionic rights, but also questioning a paradise that seems too good to be true. I really liked that while Elaine is exploring who she is and who she wants to be, Sem has some of the same questions and is figuring out how to have the courage to answer those questions. It made their emotional connection feel grounded even as their physical attraction to each other kept me wanting to know what was going to happen between them. I also really enjoyed finding out what happened with Sunny and Freddie in the background! This is definitely a book I will be rereading!

I gotta be honest with you - this was cute af. I don’t typically read spicy romance novels, or sci-fi. So this was a bit out of my range. But I received it as an ARC and was like why the heck not? I needed something to rest my brain. I just finished Tender is the Flesh and let’s be real, that book is a lot. I needed something lighthearted and cute and fun.

I, Bionic very much delivered! Apparently this is the second book, but since they’re standalone it can be read alone. And for fans of Ice Planet Barbarian, get ready for another hot blue guy - though this one is much more normally…equipped shall we say.

I just loved this cute little romance. It had so many romcom elements and Sem was so nice. I am a sucker for the dark brooding love interest but sometimes it’s nice to have a smart, kinda nerdy, genuinely nice guy in a book you know? Sem was a breath of fresh air. The ending of the story was wrapped up nicely as well, no loose ends with the plot and a pretty happy ending. Actually the ending was one of my favorite parts. The execution and the slight emotional roller coaster had me grinning because I was so happy it had turned out so well. These two are such a cute couple 😭

I give the spice 🌶🌶. It was there and it was well written but it wasn’t anything like super crazy you know. Very normal and very cute. Romance fans will enjoy this one! It was truly just a really fun read!

Thank you to the author Jess K Hardy for the eARC of I Bionic in exchange for an honest review.

I, Bionic follows Elanie, a Bionic who is going through puberty since she installed the upgrade program.
First 10 chapters of the story is about Elanie's sexuality awareness and lack there of. Dr Semson battles with the issues he faces whilst being Elanie's doctor and the fact that he's fallen for her.
The story then develops into a mission to get Doctor Semson back when he gets taken. We find that some Characters aren't who they appear to be and we have the dramatic fall out from Elanie losing her memories and not knowing Dr Semson - though that doesn't last long.

The writing and the build up of this novel once we get into the story is great. I felt like the first 10 chapters covering Elanie's lack of knowledge over sexuality and puberty a bit too much. I did however like Elanie and Sem's relationship and how that developed.
I thought the action and pacing of the novel picked up halfway through and felt like the story had purpose and was coming into it's own. By the end of the novel I felt like I had read a different book to what I started and I quite enjoyed it.
