Segamat woman killed as school roof, blown off by the wind, lands on her home

SEGAMAT: A woman was killed in a freak accident after the roof of a secondary school was blown off and landed on her house along Jalan Tahang Rimau here.

Segamat fire station operations commander Abd Rahim Rahmat said they received a distress call through MERS 999 notifying them about the incident at 7.41pm on Monday (June 19).

“We immediately deployed a fire engine with five firemen to the scene. Upon arriving, we found the 5,400 sq ft roof of SMJK Seg Hwa had been blown off by the wind and (landed on) a house located next to the school.

“A woman was pulled out from the rubble by members of the public before our arrival but the victim was confirmed dead at the scene by a Health Ministry medical officer," he said here on Tuesday (June 20).

Abd Rahim added that the victim was identified as 55-year-old V. Mahadevi, and her body had been handed over to the police for further action.

He said the operation ended at 8.21pm after the firemen inspected the school building and surrounding area for any further safety hazards.
