Damsel in Distress #1

Duke in Shining Armor

Rate this book
Far from a helpless maiden, Lady Catherine Davenport had her wits and a trusty derringer pistol at her disposal. As she journeyed to Switzerland to attend school, she did not plan to play the damsel in distress. Yet, even the most independent lady could use a bit of unexpected assistance when faced with the threat of highwaymen.

Enter Lord James Hastings, Duke of Pembroke, a man of wealth often maligned as a rogue or a rake. The truth, however, lay far from these labels - he was an industrious man of leisure, delighting in worldly pleasures as any man of his station might. Marriage was the last thing on his agenda until he crossed paths with the fiercely independent and intellectual Lady Davenport.

He becomes her savior in a turn of fate, offering her protection under the most extraordinary circumstances. He was able to keep Catherine safe from the highwaymen, but the real question remains: could he protect her from the danger he himself posed?

Duke In Shining Armor is the first book in the Damsel In Distress series by Hayleigh Mills. This was my first book from this author, and I felt this romance was a promising start to a new series.

The book is broken into two halves; the time when Catherine and James meet and get to know one another, then something tears them apart, and we meet them one year later. I liked this break; it gave both characters space to grow and develop. It took me a minute to get accustomed and warm myself to James and Catherine. I could understand both characters’ motives, but I didn’t understand their reasoning or reactions at times.

Both James and Catherine felt strong obligations toward their families, which I admired. I liked watching the romance evolve, especially how the author allowed the couple to grow intellectually and romantically. The plot kept my attention. I was angry with James’ actions and reactions throughout the book; however, I felt his emotions toward Catherine were genuine.

This was an engaging, entertaining romance with a brilliant Lady that falls in love with a diligent, if clueless at times, Duke. Hayleigh Mills spins a dreamy romance that is smart and passionate and left me excited for the next book. This was a strong showing for the first book in a series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book through the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love it when every once in a while i digg in my HR genre.

I loved Catherine and her don't mess with me attitude. She was convinced that she doesn't need a man to save her. But when she meets James, something clicks and she realized that being tied to someone is not so bad after all.

Now James took a bit to warm up to. But as the story progressed he shows that is more to him and i was pleased with the way HEA happened.

I was enjoying this unusual plot, even though the pages were full of genre pap such as the mMC being tempted to nibble along the lips that the fMC unselfconsciously licks. Total eye rolling, but tolerable.

Until DNF at 30% when the supposed gentleman decides to kiss the innocent under his protection.

This is a crass manner to introduce intimacy because such behavior is no big deal in the modern world but hideously immoral behavior for the historical period in which the story is set.

I enjoyed this book, which is divided into two major timelines. In the first, Lady Catherine Davenport meets James Hastings, Duke of Pembroke after a carriage accident. They remain anonymous but their attraction to each other cannot be denied. The couple are separated, and the second part seems them reunited.

There was some bits of miscommunication – the dreaded half-overheard conversation – that frustrated me and I thought our FMC’s anger towards the duke to be slightly overdone.

There was enough complexity to the characters, an enjoyable plot, and competent writing – I was engaged in the story, although it didn’t quite hit in the feels as much as I wanted.

I will look forward to more from this author and seeing how the series develops. 3.5/5

This book is boring, and the heroine is terrible.

The heroine is not like other girls, and in case you forget, we are constantly told over and over how not like other girls she is. I mean, she has opinions about politics and likes to ride horses. So unique! The worst aspect of her personality is how she constantly denigrates other women.

The book was also super boring. The heroine is stuck in bed during the first half and there is no conflict. She and the hero instantly get along. The banter they have is shallow and banal. The entire second half of the story hinges on the world's dumbest misunderstanding. Even then, the two characters reconcile almost immediately. Then the story limps along until it actually gets interesting in the last two chapters when actual conflict and stakes are introduced, but alas it ends immediately afterwards.

Not much to say about the hero. He had less personality than the heroine and that's saying something.

A Non-Conventional Lady . . .

Lady Catherine Davenport was being sent to finishing school in Switzerland to be prepared for the marriage market, despite her resistance to the whole idea. Actually all of the men who met her believed she was too bold and opinionated to make a good wife. She was strong-willed and intelligent, which probably intimidated her potential suitors. She knew she would never be content to visit the boring ladies for afternoon tea or sit there doing needlepoint. She was meant for better things and would much rather discuss politics! And her swearing quite dismayed her father, although she thought it expressed the moment so much better and with fewer words. The life her father wanted for her would crush her spirit. Going to talk with her mother, Catherine was told the family had suffered some serious losses and both Catherine and her brother Edward would need to marry well in the hope a wealthy spouse would provide funds until they could recoup their losses. Otherwise, they would face ruin.

Lord James Hastings, Duke of Pembroke, was wealthy and often spoken of as a rake. He was not interested in marriage until the day he met Catherine and recognized her intelligence and independence. She was not like any other woman he knew. When four highwaymen attacked, she was ready to fight them off with her derringer pistol, hoping the single shot would be enough to scare them off. But the carriage lurched and Catherine fell forward as a gunshot scared the horses and the carriage crashed. Catherine and her maid were unconscious and he rode to get help. When he got back to the women, the one had a derringer pointed at him and seemed quite comfortable handling it. She would not put it down until he properly introduced himself. He had to admit to himself that she was indeed intriguing when any other lady would have had a fit of the vapors dealing with everything that happened. When he moved her broken ankle, the curse she shrieked shocked him.

Since he saved her, she wanted to stay with him while she recovered so her parents would not be angry and she could continue to Switzerland. Her reputation should be fine, she said, since her lady’s maid Helen was with her. He could offer her protection, although he may be the one she needs to be protected from the most. But eventually gossip gets around and he hears of it. Not a foolish man, he would wonder why Catherine could keep news of her family’s misfortune from him? Will he feel betrayed that she did not confide in him? Will he think it was her plan all along to deceive him? Would he understand or forgive her? Or would he no longer be interested in further pursuing her to marry him with his heart broken?

Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this story and this is my freely given opinion.

This is my first time reading something from this author, and I liked the idea of the independent heroine defending herself against highwaymen with a derringer... but still having a heroic MMC. Lady Catherine is a rather bold, outspoken daughter of an Earl, with a habit of rather salty language. Her parents have fallen on hard times and are depending on a good marriage for her to help them recover some of their financial losses, and are sending her to a Swiss finishing school to help smooth out her rough edges before bringing her to London to find a husband.

On her way to the school, she and her retinue are held up by highwaymen and she and some of her crew end up being discovered, injured, by James, the Duke of Pembroke, who brings them to his estate to recover. Catherine decides to not inform her family of her injury and delay in travel, and convinces the Duke to follow along her plan. She also withholds her identity from him. They grow closer as she recovers, but then she overhears something that convinces her that he is a rake, and their growing closeness is meaningless to him, and she leaves while he is away, to continue on way to Switzerland. James, on his return, is bereft, not understanding why she left, and not knowing her real identity, how to find her.

One year later, they meet up again in London. Catherine and James pretend they have never met before, and he pursues, with both their parents approval, but she discourages him, considering what she overheard at his estate that makes her think he is not a suitable husband for her. Ultimately they face a few more barriers to their HEA involving miscommunications, misunderstandings that all are overcome in the path to love.

I liked the characters of James and Catherine, but I found that there were a number of issues I had with story itself, such as why Catherine, if she is willing to make a sacrifice for her family of finding a wealthy man to marry, does she even decide to hide her identity from the Duke - he is a wealthy, eligible bachelor after all. There are others too, but I do not want to spoil the story either.

Also, there were some language quirks that occurred frequently enough to be a noticeable annoyance. Such as a frequent complaint that Catherine left without a "bye your leave" - first, it is bye, and secondly, she did not need his permission to leave or do anything. But perhaps this was corrected as I had an ARC copy .

3 stars out of 5; I liked the characters, and the overall story, but some of the plot discrepancies detracted from the story for me.

Lady Catherine Davenport was being sent to a finishing school in Switzerland to prepare for the marriage market. Everyone her father tried to marry her off to felt she was too bold and opinionated.

She had hoped that being allowed to study alongside her brother meant she would have more choices in her future, but now she is being told she has to marry or her family's future will be ruined since her father had lost several ships carrying valuable cargo bankrupting them.

The last thing she wanted was to spend her life making house calls, having afternoon tea and doing needlepoint, but she also loved her family and knew her duties so she set about packing for her trip.

Catherine was jolted from her sleep as the carriage came to a jarring stop and she peeked out the window to see four masked men holding guns on the driver but before she could grab her derringer from her valise she and her lady's maid are thrown about as the carriage takes off as the driver tries to escape the highwaymen.

James Hastings, the Duke of Pembroke, was out for his morning ride when he sees a carriage shattered on the road before him. Two women are lying on the ground but no one else is in sight. When he returns after sending for the doctor he finds himself facing the now awake young woman aiming her gun at his head.

I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Catherine was injured in the carriage crash but refuses to tell the Duke her full name instead begging him to let her stay long enough for her ankle to mend so she can continue her travels to Switzerland. Even though getting married is the last thing on her mind she is determined to not let down her family.

The Duke of Pembroke tries to avoid Lady Catherine but the longer she is convalescing the more he likes her spirit and quick wit. His mother has been after him to marry and until now he hasn't met anyone he was willing to settle down with. But when he returns from checking out one of his tenant farms he finds that she has packed up and left with no notice.

This book is action-packed and will keep you turning the pages. Catherine overhears something that has her running and when she meets James again when she is being presented for The Season he is determined to make her his wife. But she is just as determined to avoid him at all costs.

Highly recommend.

Soooo…when I started reading Duke in Shining Armor I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I had seen one of my fav authors' posts about Hayleigh Mills' debut so naturally my curiosity was piqued — Who is this author and more importantly…CAN SHE WRITE? Folks…girlfriend can write.

I love love LOVE this book. Probably because it has so much heart to it. Duke in Shining Armor is pure enchantment. The main characters are simply magical together. From their dialogue to their interactions with one another…sigh…And, y'all know I love me a gallant hero and James Hastings is indeed that. He literally saved a damsel in distress folks from a burning carriage (okay maybe it wasn’t burning…but ole girl was definitely in peril). He could save me any day…IJS!

The book is fairly straightforward, not a lot of drama or angst. While there's not an abundance of turmoil, there's definitely a surplus of genuine emotion and heart.

Lady Catherine Davenport, to me, is the perfect heroine. Just a bit wild, just a bit of a bluestocking and more than a bit used to doing things her own way. Totally content with remaining unwed, Cath has no choice but to as her family’s circumstances have changed. To prepare her for the marriage mart, She is being sent to a finishing school in Switzerland. While en route, she finds herself in trouble.Thankfully a tall, irresistibly handsome man is in the vicinity when all hell breaks loose and steps in to save the day!

James Hastings, Duke of Pembroke is so dreamy. Charming as all get out…attentive…kind…compassionate just the kind of Duke to sweep me off my feet (wink).. Like Cath, he has no plans to wet but there’s something extraordinary about the woman he rescued from the side of the road. She’s a woman of substance…beauty.. intelligence everything he’s always sought but unable to find in one woman. As Cathereine recovers on his estate, the two get to know each other and something they once thought undesirable has a new appeal.

Duke is Shining Armor is a fantastic. Hayleigh’s writing style is refreshing and romantic…and I love it. Cant wait to see what’s next in her Damsel in Distress series!

Lady Catherine Davenport was supposed to be at a finishing school in Switzerland but she was waylaid by highwaymen and then rescued by a handsome duke. While convalescing, she gets to know the handsome duke better and although they both are against marriage, they cant deny their attraction to each other.

The characters are not bad, Catherine is a little spitfire which was nice to see, but the duke seemed a bit boring. Some parts that tend to linger on a little too much, a rushed ending, but a sweet epilogue.
While not a unique story line, it had some nice moments. But what took this down in my opinion was the way it is written. The first chapter was great but when compared with the rest, it almost as if someone else wrote it. In the subsequent chapters, the author uses big, flowery words as if searching through a thesaurus. It didn't feel like English was the primary language and it was translated. For example: "She eschewed this delicate countenance." Although I know what she meant, other readers might question this. It does not read easy. Other areas for improvement was overall grammar and sentence tense and structure. Such as, "He needed to get help. There was a farm not far away, and James must reach it."
If the author was able to use a proofreader and editor, this book would be so much better. I will note that I was provided with an advanced copy, it had gone through an editing process of sorts, but I am hoping it gets further work.

I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.

Lady Catherine Davenport is told by her parents that she has to go to finishing school in Switzerland to change her wild ways and to get a good marriage match. Of course she is worried that she will become bored because she loves to discuss politics and other events that are usually above a lady. She is not as eager to marry as her sisters are. As she goes on her Journey to even get to Switzerland her coach gets held up and adventure ensues.
Lord James Hastings, Duke of Pembroke is a man who is not at the point of being married and no woman holds his attention long enough for him to entertain the idea. The Duke wants a strong woman who has a mind. The Duke rescues Lady Catherine and her lady’s maid. They end up staying at his house to heal. Both of them end up having to face their previous notions about marriage and decide on what is right for them.
I loved that Catherine never did cower from anyone and was herself pretty much no matter what was thrown at her. She was spunky. I liked that the Duke actually told his friend his feelings instead of just keeping them to himself, although he did not always get his ideas across to Lady Catherine. I enjoyed this book it was a good quick read. I would definitely read other books by this author.

Charming and heartfelt.

I completely enjoyed this lovely story. At first I was surprised that Lady Catherine's family did find the appropriate guidance in England. They could have saved the coin, but the story depended on the journey. I enjoyed the time they had to get to know each other.

Lady Catherine is a unique young lady who has had learning advantages most of her peers would not. She has been allowed to have a mind for serious things and not kept in the hothouse to do embroidery and talk about trivial matters. She is self assured and isn't prone to the vapors. I liked her immediately!

James Hastings, the Duke of Pembroke, has always been confident and thought nothing could surprise him, until Catherine. He also had never had to work so hard to get a woman.

This was an unconventional approach to getting to know someone, but it worked for me. Their spirited conversations, thought sharing and tension filled touches kept the pages turning. The fact she did not confront James had me shaking my head. I understood it was her lack of world and life experiences, but she had such a stong opinion on other injustices.

This is the first book by this author for me. I will be looking into more.

Vibes–5
I enjoyed this book! I hadn’t read a historical romance in so long and this really filled a hole I didn't know I had. I found myself giggling and kicking my feet at times and wanting to slap the Duke myself (you’ll unfortunately see why).

Writing–3
This is my first book by this author and I wasn’t disappointed! We get a variety of tropes in this one. The writing for me was good and not great.

Flow–3
The pacing was set so well at the beginning! We didn’t have to wait long for them to meet and this is not instalove if you’re into that. I will say that I felt the end was rushed a bit and that there wasn’t much conflict or conflict resolution. If I could get a few more chapters, I could see my rating changing.

Characters-3
Catherine is THAT girl! She is cultured, learned, etc. etc. She knows that her worth is not tied to her marrying a man and is not afraid to speak her mind. I want to like James but there’s something about him that gives me the ick. I like who he is with Catherine and his best friend but I also want him to grow up.

Storyline–3
There wasn’t anything too original about the plot and I don’t want to give it away.

All in all this was a good, average book and a light read!

17/25 = 68%

Never having read or not use to HR genre, Lady Katherine Davenport had me captivated. Bold, opinionated willful an headstrong versus afternoon tea, house calls an doing needlepoint. Any Woman bold enough to carry a Derringer Pistol has my vote of confidence. Lady Davenport was sent to finishing school in Switzerland by her family to come back prepared for marriage befitting her station. However, along the way the coachman was killed an Lady Davenport along with her handmaiden ended up at Pembrook Estate needing medical attention.
I’d want to meet an marry a man who was excited that I went against society norms an was taught about society, ledgers, business, estate laws, an my country.
Lady Davenport in a conversation with the Duke of Pembrook that “ We ladies are so sheltered. Women are taught to not be aware of matters that men must tend to daily.
Opinionated Lady Davenporthas strong views concerning slavery “Having knowledge beyond what is allowed, she could not slip up because her father would continue to berate her.
I learned where different terminology came from an I learned that the Duke of Pembrook was two an thirty forth width.
Great storyline an plot for this first time reader for a honest review for a ARC.

Super enjoyable reading, able to hold your attention till the end, a real page turner. Well written, all characters are well developed. Catherine has been told by her parents that she is to be sent to Switzerland to finishing school due to her behavior- swearing and politics. She had been able to be tutored along side of her brother. This was not really allowed by the ton then. James is a Duke , who really doesn't want to marry but his mother wants him too. James comes across Catherine after a blotched highway robbery and her carriage crashes. She stays at his home till her broken ankle heals. During that time they spend a lot of time together and find that they have feelings for each other. Well, she overhears him speaking to his mistress and abruptly leaves. They do not meet up again for one year. Both still have the same feelings and they are able to have their happily ever after. Excellent storyline, full of drama, love, suspense, interfering people and the Ton's gossip. Would recommend this book to everyone.

Hayleigh is a new author to me. It has been a few years since I've read a historical novel, but I enjoyed this story about Lady Catherine Davenport, who is an embarrassment to her father since the suitors he has chosen have all found fault with her. Therefore he has decided to send her to a finishing school in Switzerland to prepare her for a marriage befitting her station. While on her way to get to her destination, drama and an accident happen. She is rescued by James, the Duke of Pembroke. I loved how Catherine spoke her mind and certainly knew how to threaten with a derringer. She finds herself stuck with James due to an injury she receives and is not happy about being unable to travel. They find themselves feelings they shouldn't feel for each other. Will they follow through and get their HEA?
I received an arc for my voluntary honest review for NNBB. If you love a sweet historical romance with some drama, you will enjoy this read.

Lady Catherine Davenport is travelling to Switzerland to attend finishing school when her carriage is held up by highwaymen, her coachman tries to outride them but is shot & the horses gallop out of control until the carriage collides with a tree. James Hastings, Duke of Pembroke hears the crash & rushes to help never expecting his world was about to turn upside down.
A very accomplished debut novel, the pace is good the characters have depth & the story kept my interest all the way through. I really liked both James & Catherine who whilst thrown together find they have lots in common & their relationship grows & deepens. However a misunderstanding & wrong assumption has Catherine running. When they meet a year later, they still have feelings for each other but James has an awful lot of making up & grovelling to do, then a Davenport secret is revealed. A very enjoyable romance
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

It's been a while since I read a historical novel and Duke in Shining Armor was a good one. Catherine was a feisty and sassy heroine and I really liked her; it took me a while to warm up to James, our Duke in Shining Armor, though, and feel he was worthy of Catherine, but I liked him more the more I get to know him as the story progressed. They did have chemistry, which is always a plus.

The story was interesting and it was nice seeing Catherine and James's romance unfold. The writing was good, and while I'm aware I got an ARC and it isn't the final proof, usually the copies I get are cleaner in a sense. I really hope some of the editing issues I found were fixed in the final version, as they were a bit grating. Still, I have no problem recommending this book to fans of historical romances.

Secrets, duty and highwaymen set the stage for this charming story. Catherine is content not to marry, until circumstances contrive to make that necessary. An accident brings her together with James, the Duke of Pembroke, and an unexpected bond forms while she convalesces. But a misunderstanding and a year at finishing school separate them, until she returns and he pursues her, until jealousy and rumors rear their ugly heads. I always love it when two people who have continuously stated that they have no desire to marry find each other. Their internal conflict is emotional and their ah-ha moments are inspiring. This story is well written, entertaining and there is a sweetness to this tale that makes it refreshing.

Lady Catherine isn’t the usual debutante. She has been educated with her brother and enjoys discussing politics. On her way to a finishing school in Switzerland, she is rescued by James Harding, Duke of Pembroke. James is being pestered by his mother to marry but he has no interest at the current time. James has a bit of a reputation but he isn’t as bad as he is painted. He spends a good amount of time on his estate and caring for his tenants. As James and Catherine spend time together so they become more attracted to each other. However, circumstances cause them to part. What will happen when they meet again? I did like that Catherine was wary of James and determined to only marry someone who would love her. This was an entertaining read. This is the first book I have read from this author and it is a good first offering. I loved the storyline with our feisty heroine, Catherine doing her best to be herself and help her family. It was an interesting plot twist in how she got the hero, James to do as she asked. Love blooming and then exploding is inevitable, but the reason was very well written. Sometimes the story was very well done and sometimes almost juvenile-like it was written for young, young ladies. I had to question the scandal with the honeymoon and after researching, found very little to support the author’s ideas on it. But overall, a very entertaining read.

SWEET

I liked this story. It was a sweet love with a little steam, not too graphic. I really loved the characters together. Catherine and James were a great complement and support to one another. They did have moments of uncharacteristic foolishness, like making assumptions and running instead of talking it thorough with one another or letting insecurities of reciprocation stop them from expressing their own feelings. James’s friendship with the Earl of Warwick was great too. Their interactions were funny and heartfelt. It showed genuine friendship. The HEA at the end was worth the wait and any frustration because it showed their true feelings for one another regardless of all else.

Catherine and James...

She's stubborn, speaks her mind, wants a partner not a master, but will do her duty for her family that she holds dear. He's stubborn, speaks his mind, wants a partner not a submissive beauty, but will do his duty to uphold his family name. From the little we know about each of them, they are a perfect match, if only they'd be honest enough with each other to recognize it, AND hopefully before it burns them through! 🔥 They have ups and downs, hot nights and misunderstandings that lead to more than a cold shoulder 🥶, but eventually, all roads lead to... well, potential scandal, then possibly ruin, but eventually.... love ❤️.

Historical Romance fans, give it a go, and see what you think!

I liked this book but couldn't give it 5 stars because I felt we missed out on some of the story. In my opinion, there seemed to be some areas that were just jumped over. All in all though, it was a good book.
The Damsel in Distress in this book is a bit of a firecracker and even though she has a task set before her, she's going to do it her own way. The Duke is definitely a man - one who doesn't see what's right in front of him and when he does he second guesses himself until he almost loses it.

Seppy's 4-Star Review:

Catherine and James aren't very interested in getting married. Catherine's father sent her to a school in Switzerland. Along the way, something happens and she comes across James who is a Duke. They spend a lot of time together and they develop feelings. Something happens and she flees. What happens when these two come face to face again?

Catherine and James.

Catherine was a very independent woman for her time. Though with her parents almost to financial ruin, they wanted her to marry and save them. She was not really wanting that, but it is what happened in that time period.

James was a wealthy man. He liked being single and didn't want to marry yet. He happens upon Catherine and her maid at a time where she should have wanted his help. She did/didn't.

This was a great read. Brought some of the past to life. This is a new to me author and I can guarantee I will be reading again.

As a Debut novel, this one was not bad, I really liked the plot, and that the time scale for falling in love, and committing to each other was a little more realistic than just a 2-3 day whirlwind romance. The characters grew as the story went on, even if the hero seems a little dense where women are concerned. It did slow and drag a little in the middle, and it went over her feelings alot and her doubts. But all in all an enjoyable read, I will be following the author for the next in the series.

Overall the book was good considering it is not my go-to sub genre.

I enjoyed how strong our FMC Catherine is and how she doesn’t really care what others think of her or give in to what is expected of her.

Our MMC James is a good character but I found him a bit juvenile at times in his words and actions.

The book is in 3rd person which isn’t my favorite but I still enjoyed it.

Think Bridgerton when going into this one.

This is a 3.5 star review and wish I could give it more but some things in this book was not reasonable. Catherine gets injured and James rescues her and takes her to his home to recover. As feelings emerge she finds out something about him that sends her out the door only to meet him again later but is it too late.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A first HR from a promising new author. While I generally liked this book, and especially the bit of a plot twist in the middle, I felt the character development was a little superficial. We weren’t given a lot of the deeper feelings into the development of the relationship or in the dialogue. It is my understanding that this is her first book, so I look forward to continuing the series and seeing her writing develop. I suspect she will stay on my “must read” list of authors.
