Division One contenders Middlesex have suffered a huge setback with the news that all-rounder Gareth Berg has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
The 33-year-old South Africa-born player has been out of action for the past eight weeks due to an abscess in his shoulder.
However, a further examination has revealed he has torn a large rotator cuff muscle in the same shoulder which will require surgery.
Angus Fraser, the county's managing director of cricket, said: "This is obviously extremely disappointing news for Gareth and Middlesex.
“He is an extremely important player, in that he gives the team quality and balance. Gareth's presence has and will continue to be missed by the team and we all wish him a speedy and full recovery."
Berg joined Middlesex from Northamptonshire in 2007.
