Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With a central plot line hinging on a bioengineered strain of killer ladybugs and a solution that will strike most as far-fetched, this romantic cozy is an unremarkable outing for Soule (Chase the Dream), better known for writing straight romances. P.J. Benson, an accountant in the small Michigan town of Zenith, leads a humdrum existence as April 15 approaches. When a dead stranger turns up in her house, P.J. becomes the prime suspect of hunky homicide detective Wade Kingsley. Further break-ins make P.J. wonder whether the killer was after a mysterious box stolen from her neighbors, Julia and John Westman, but when the Westmans deny ever telling her that the box contained lethal insects, neighbors familiar with her family history of mental illness begin to wonder whether P.J. herself is losing touch with reality. The burgeoning relationship between P.J. and Wade generates few sparks, leaving little to keep readers going through the slow-moving plot.

Maris Soule has had 25 contemporary romances, 5 mysteries, and 2 short stories published. She is a two-time finalist for the RITA award, winner of the 2017 Royal Palm Literary Contest for mystery/suspense, and has placed or won in several other contests. In addition to her hardcover mysteries, THE CROWS and A KILLER PAST, are also available as paperbacks, and all of her mysteries are available as e-books. She is currently working on getting most of her romances out as e-books.

Born and raised in California, Soule was working on a master's degree in art history at U.C. Santa Barbara when she was swept off her feet by a redhead with blue eyes. Soule now lives in southwest Michigan and winters in Florida with the same redhead. She has two grown (and married) children and two granddaughters, co-owns a pocket trawler with her husband, still draws and paints, and loves to cook (though she has been known to burn a few meals, especially if she takes "just a minute" to go on the computer). P J Benson moves into her grandfather's home in the country and finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery, a wayward scientist's mischief, greed, jealousy, and a handsome detective who doesn't believe her. And these are just starters. Good, lively read.

Very intense, interesting and well planned. I couldn't put the book down. I've read the author's books before and they are ALL worth reading. Definately a great choice of reading material and even a better price.

The Crows was a great quick read that always kept me waiting to read more. I loaned it to my husband and he really enjoyed it as well. Who was really the murderer? Why was this the house? How can she get herself out of the mess she is accidentally caught up in? Who keeps breaking in? These are all questions waiting to be answered. You will be very surprised at the answers.

More than a pleasant read, this story caught and held my interest. I found myself wanting to pick it up each time to see how the plot would next unfold.
Nice characters and dialogue, with a twist at the end. I look forward to others in the series.
