👋 Meet team #2 of our Global South Perspective Journal: Azizah Fauzi from Center for Indonesian Policy Studies and Regean mugume from Economic Policy Research Centre. They are both also winners of our Young Think Tankers contest! Their research will focus on how efforts to enforce sustainability standards may disproportionately burden small farmers in the #GlobalSouth, due to limited technical and financial capacity to comply with the requirements. 🧑🌾🌎 It will explore how these conditions impose unintended non-tariff barriers (NTBs) to farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, leading to increased household #poverty and exacerbating low productivity in #agriculture. Curious? Watch Azizah Fauzi share more in this video: https://lnkd.in/dbFZcqqz #Africa #Asia #LatinAmerica #food #farmers #research #NTBs #tariff #sustainability #climate #SDGs #regulation #barrier

🇩🇪 Today, Southern Voice was present at the Global Solutions Initiative in Berlin. Our director of global and public affairs Gabriela Keseberg Dávalos moderated the session "#BRICS, #G20, and the Path to Collective Action," focused on discussing the evolving international order and how to promote collective action. The session's panelists were Elizabeth Sidiropoulos from South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), Stewart Patrick from Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Marta Fernández from BRICS Policy Center and Qian Xiao from the Center for International Security and Strategy, Tsinghua University. The first question posed to the audience and panelists focused on whether mini-lateral forums like the G20, BRICS and the #G7 are a substitute for the universal-membership United Nations. Most, including almost all panelists, agreed that it is not. Panelists also answered whether BRICS and G20 are complementary. They discussed areas of possible collaboration between the groups, including #digital and #AI, biodiversity, #health and food security. Climate, they said, is becoming increasingly geopolitical. What is the next step after #SDGs? Panelists discuss #poverty, and the G20 having the capacity to boost structural transformations. They proposed a focus on the group operating at a broader level rather than on specific, smaller projects.

🇧🇷🌐 On Wednesday we joined a #G20 event in São Paulo #Brazil focused on promoting #information integrity and trust in the #digital environment. It brought together public authorities, researchers, regulators, leaders of online platforms and the general public to discuss ways to fight disinformation, hate speech and threats to public institutions online. The conference gathered over 500 participants from 50 countries, and you can read highlights here: ➡️ There are concerns over the negative impact of disinformation and hate on #climate change, armed conflict, health crises such as the covid-19 pandemic, and #elections that will be held in several of the world’s most populous countries this year ➡️ Nobel Prize winner Maria Ressa brought attention to the specific targeting of #women – in particular journalists, politicians and activists – in online attacks and hate campaigns ➡️ There is great vulnerability of specific communities to online disinformation and hate speech, as they are targeted due to their role in promoting democracy, human rights and climate justice, as is the case of #indigenous populations ➡️ Panelists also highlighted the need for increased #regulation to promote information integrity, and called for transparency from #media platforms ➡️ Investing in digital literacy and fostering critical thinking were also presented as part of the solution to prevent the spread of harmful content and its real-world consequences #GlobalSouth #technology #digitalliteracy #trust #disinformation #hatespeech #climatechange #Africa #Asia #LatinAmerica #SDGs

👋 Meet team #1 of our Global South Perspective Journal: Alexander (Xander) Causwell and Diana Thorburn, PhD from Caribbean Policy Research Institute (CAPRI). Their research will focus on understanding how under-governed spaces in #GlobalSouth countries contribute to international insecurity by providing safe havens for non-state armed groups. The primary research question investigates whether political expediency or lack of state capacity determines policies that under-govern territories, allowing them to be exploited BY NSAGs. Curious? Watch Alexander Causwell share more in this video: https://lnkd.in/dqKJ-8RG #Africa #Asia #LatinAmerica #security #peace #insecurity #research #NSAGs #nonstatearmedgroups #armedgroups #armedconflict
