Critical Acclaim for Rogues & Patriots:
“Nick Crane is the kind of guy you can count on. He’s smart, tough, and persistent, a throwback to the classic American PI, in the mold of Marlowe and Spade, the kind of guy who runs into the burning building rather than hit the fire alarm. So, be prepared to buckle up for this wild ride.” —Charles Salzberg, Three-Time Shamus Award nominee, author of Man on the Run, and winner of the Beverly Hills Book Award
“In Rogues & Patriots, LA PI Nick Crane’s courage and cunning are put to the test as he battles sinister super patriots. A heart-pounding tale of espionage, friendship, and one man’s unwavering resolve against dark forces.” —Michael D. Sellers, award winning-writer and director of Eye of the Dolphin
“Moore has written a book to savor––vivid characters and crackling, high-voltage dialogue… Moore is a master of poetic detail that captures the era’s howling rage while creating a dark and menacing mood.” —John Nardizzi, PI of the year and Shamus award finalist for The Burden of Innocence
“Rogues and Patriots is fast-paced, taught, and lean. Moore has evolved into a seasoned and uncompromising author who crafts stories that so ingrain themselves into your psyche, that it’s darn impossible to put his books down.” —Max Myers, award-winning author, screenwriter and film director
“Moore has produced a thought-provoking and suspenseful thriller as PI Nick Crane squares off against a creepy cabal of paramilitarists intent on taking power. Set against the intensifying political divides of our time, Rogues and Patriots builds the action and plot twists with masterful, page-turning precision while offering an insider’s portrayal of the investigator’s world and the desperate, colorful characters who inhabit it.” —John Brown, Los Angeles private investigator

About the author
Patrick H. Moore is a Los Angeles based Investigator, Sentencing Mitigation Specialist, and crime writer. He has been working in this field since 2003 and has worked in virtually all areas including drug trafficking, sex crimes, crimes of violence, and white-collar fraud.
“There’s no feeling quite like walking into a prison to consult with a client knowing that he or she is facing many long years behind bars, unless you can thread the needle and convince a skeptical Federal judge to give your guy or gal a second chance. Criminals are not known for putting a high priority on telling the truth; neither are cops and prosecutors.”
This is no easy task but mastering this job, which combines art, science and intuition, has given Patrick the tools to write realistic crime fiction that depicts the unpredictable and violent world of cops, convicts, prosecutors and defense attorneys.
In February of 2013, Patrick started All Things Crime Blog, a true crime and crime fiction website, which for several years was one of the most popular crime blogs in the United States. What set All Things Crime Blog apart from the competition was the high quality of the writing from its many excellent contributors, and Patrick’s idiosyncratic, personalized approach to writing about crime. This was not merely reporting the alleged facts; this was interpreting the facts and tying them in to our everyday experience as we attempt to survive in an increasingly hostile and terrifying world.
Patrick holds a Master’s degree in English Literature from San Francisco State University where he graduated summa cum laude in 1990. Prior to moving to Los Angeles, he was lead vocalist and played rhythm guitar for Crash Carnival, a San Francisco rock ‘n roll band, and experienced the “naked lunch” of life on the streets for more than a decade.
Patrick's first crime novel, Cicero's Dead, was published by U.S. iNDiE Books in November of 2014.
27 Days, Patrick's first traditionally published thriller, was published on February 6, 2023 by Down & Out Books. It is the first in a three-part series in which veteran Los Angeles Private Investigator Nick Crane battles a group of aristocratic domestic terrorists known as the "principals." 27 Days was recently named a finalist in the General Fiction: Thriller category of the 2023 American Fiction Awards.
The second book in Patrick's three-part series is entitled Rogues and Patriots. It will be published by Down & Out Books on April 22, 2023.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2024Rogues and Patriots is Patrick Moore’s prequel to the fantastic 27 Days (Down and Out Books 2023). Both books keep you on the edge of your chair from the start. The hero, Nick Crane is both sentimental and hard-boiled. He alternates between talking to his daughter about her dance performances and knifing assailants in back alleys. He shows some constraint – he tries not to always kill his adversaries.
Set against the backdrop of our current culture wars, Rogues and Patriots spins a world where a shadowy deep-right organization (‘the Principals’) is working to undermine democracy and civil liberties. Each villain has their own motivation – some of them are very dark indeed. Nick Crane and his associates are out to stop them.
Like all good detective thrillers, this book has complex subplots and backstories, love interests, and domestic issues. It is very well written and organized so it is fairly easy to keep these straight. The ending is appropriately astounding and ambiguous. You will have to read (or re-read) 27 Days to see what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2024Rogues and Patriots, the second book in the Nick Crane series, seizes hold of you from the first page with its absorbing plot and unforgettable characters ~ characters that range from the essentially decent to those who are opportunistic, unscrupulous, and downright dangerous.
Nick Crane, together with a few loyal and very capable friends, becomes aware of “the Principals” in an up-close-and-personal way as he navigates the treacherous rapids of political deceit and interference with personal freedom. As the story unfolds, we encounter the perennial human attributes of courage, honor, and loyalty among friends and the fundamental goodness that is the cornerstone of action against the ruthless dishonesty of the group that wants to “make America great again” on their terms and to their own advantage.
With its crisp dialogue and unceasing action, this book takes you on a sometimes troubling ride into today’s issues of immigration and political manipulation through misinformation. An intelligent thriller that not only greatly entertains but also demonstrates concern for the present dilemmas of the 21st century.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2024Patrick H. Moore's Rogues & Patriots explodes right out of the gate and barely slows down. Of course, there are some lulls in the extreme action, but that serves to give it the roller coaster feeling of the best thrillers.
Although book 2 of his Nick Crane trilogy against a conservative cabal that labels its cohorts as conservatives, this is the prequel origin story of Nick's battle against "the Principals," who are behind the scenes players and manipulators planning to drag the country toward a fascistic state. (I'd recommend reading this book first, then the first book second, since that makes Nick's adventures more linear.)
Beginning with the death of a police informant in LA, Nick gets dragged deeper and deeper into the evil underbelly of a so-called patriot movement, involving not only murder but kidnapping, black sites, human trafficking and further detestable, nefarious activities.
It should be noted that Moore's hard-boiled LA PI with soft side calls his business Nick Crane & Associates, and his friends and associates are a vital part of the story. Each drawn with verve and finesse, Moore's characters jump off the page.
If you like your stories packed with grit, gallantry, adventure, and intricate plotting, this one's for you.
Here's hoping Nick survives to stick around for many more adventures.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2024Patrick Moore’s Nick Crane story ROGUES & PATRIOTS starts off with a wallop, a first sentence worthy of James Crumley: “The frowning corpse of Roberto Diaz was found by a jogger on Friday morning at six a.m. on a windswept hillside in East Los Angeles.” Twenty hours later, PI Nick Crane and his friend L.A.P.D. detective Tony Bott, for whom Diaz had been working as a police snitch, are off to Culiacan, Mexico, to deliver the news and their condolences to Diaz’ widow. And thus, this spy-guy suspense and mystery begins.
If you’re an old Charles McCarry fan, or maybe fancy you’d be attracted to the illegitimate offspring of James Ellroy and Don DeLillo, then you’ll want to make a date with Moore. But you’ll need to be ready for characters and stories deeper than Brad Thor. This author’s got wonderful dialog, some GREAT! action, but is also not shy about using some very innovative narrative techniques.
Like McCarry, Moore paints across a wide canvas. Characters are on one side or the other—unless there’s the surprise of a third side—only Crane and his reader often don’t know which at first. Usually not until someone’s dead. Both sides think they’re good Americans, so looking for emotional clues isn’t going to work here any better than it usually does in le Carré. Action is fast, and like motives, often complicated.
The 1st-person point-of-view accelerates the pace; the prose is stylish; clues jump out like frolicking rabbits. Though action extends coast to coast, there are L.A. landmarks aplenty, putting Patrick Moore in a revered tradition: “More rugged and closer to the ocean than Laurel and Benedict Canyons, Rustic Canyon is mostly undeveloped. Just the Nazi camp, a Boy Scout camp farther in, and occasional eccentric dwellings.” Moore's descriptions (of Los Angeles in particular) grab the reader while never interfering with the plot’s forward thrust. Here’s another: “Lou Perez owns two buildings tucked away at the end of a long, badly paved driveway in a crumbling East Los Angeles industrial park north of City Terrace. … When I got there, a catering truck was just leaving.”
But this is not the Cold War of George Smiley or Arkady Renko: “If I’d been CIA working out of Moscow Station, I would’ve rappelled to the ground from one of the second-story windows… Instead, I stepped out onto the porch.” High literary humor brought home.
Crane’s no Jack Reacher either: “Spat in his face and he flinched. All the edge I needed. Caught him with an upthrust forearm, knocking the gun out of his hand. Drove my four-inch blade into his solar plexus. Bull-rushed him, twisting the blade deeper into his gut. Yanked it out. A second thrust. … Then he was on top of me…. Big mistake. I drove the blade into the side of his neck. … Rolled out from under him and kicked him hard in the side of the head.”
Nick Crane is one of the last kind-hearted heroes left, who just happens to go nuclear when he’s cornered by the bad guys. And I give this author Patrick H. Moore "only" 4+ stars—because my sense is there’s an even GREATER masterpiece yet to come from his sleuthy pen. **** stars
