California releases new guidelines for youth sports
Student-athletes, coaches and parents have new guidance from the state on how teams can play and practice sports during the coronavirus pandemic, and the new rules mean competitions will be sidelined even longer.
The new rules apply to school sports, club sports and recreational programs.
Up until this week, sports organizations had been following generic guidelines from the state health department. The new interim guidelines say that any sports events that would promote congregating outside or inside are not permitted. That includes tournaments and competitions. That rules applies regardless of whether the teams are from the same school or same county.
Youth sports will only be permitted when physical distancing can be maintained at 6 feet and a stable group, like a class, can be maintained to reduce the risk of transmission. Any other activities should focus on individual conditioning and training.
Face coverings will be required during indoor physical conditioning where gyms are allowed to reopen. Students should also avoid sharing equipment unless it can be disinfected between uses.

Last month, the California Interscholastic Federation, which governs high school athletics, announced that the fall sports season would be pushed back to 2021.
