Psalm 139:24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. 

Exodus 20:7 – You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 

Exodus 20:7 (ESV) – You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 

Using the Lord’s name is serious business because… 

#1 – It’s from ! 

“In vain” – שָׁוְא – šāv’ :

emptiness, nothingness, emptiness of speech, lying, worthlessness

Simon/Peter (John 1:42) – NT

In God’s name is His &  

Psalm 147:4-54 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. 5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

Philippians 2:9-11 – 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 

Acts 4:12 – Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved

2 Peter 3:9 – The Lord is…not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Psalm 46:1 – God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Acts 3:6-8 – 6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”  

7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.

Using the Lord’s name is serious business because…

1 Chronicles 13:9-109 When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10 The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.

Matthew 21:12-1312 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
