10) JOBS
Technical Associate (Carbon Removal) | Lower Carbon
Lowercarbon Capital backs companies that make real money slashing CO2 emissions, sucking carbon out of the sky, and buying us time to save the planet. We invest in early-stage companies that combine hard science with some bonkers ambitions to decarbonize all sectors of the economy, remove billions of tons of CO2 straight out of the atmosphere, and buy more time for people and ecosystems getting hit first and worst by rising temperatures.

Postdoctoral researcher in geochemical modeling | University of Antwerp
BAM! is our ambitious European Commission Horizon 2020 Future Emerging Technology (FET Open) project that aims to develop a novel bioreactor technology for negative CO2 emissions. Negative emission technologies actively sequester CO2 from the atmosphere, thus counterbalancing climate change. To achieve this, BAM! brings the most critical natural CO2 sequestering process on geological timescales, silicate weathering, to a controlled reactor environment. This bioreactor will harness the power of biota to massively increase CO2 sequestration rates. Geochemical modelling is essential for understanding and quantifying CO2 removal through enhanced weathering.

11) PODCASTS
Building soil carbon can create another income stream with Jada Dormaier | Secrets of the Soil Podcast with Regen Ray
Digging deep into all parts of the soil and carbon and soil. So we started talking about carbon farming and carbon sequestration, a lot of people like. The company is focusing on those vintage ones. And its play in the markets all across the world.
Innovative Ways to Approach CO2 Storage | Capture, Store, Repeat
What constitutes a CO2 storage site? And are there innovative ways to approach CO2 storage development, particularly as interest around carbon capture and storage technology grows? We’re joined by Dr. Alex Bump, a research science associate with the University of Texas’ Gulf Coast Carbon Center to unpack where CO2 storage development is at now, and how it can continue to evolve in the future.
CCS and Decarbonising the Cement and Concrete Industry | Capture, Store, Repeat
CCS is scaling up across a wide range of industries, and cement and concrete is no exception. In this episode, we speak with Claude Lorea, Director of Cement, Innovation and ESG of the Global Cement and Concrete Association, about the value of CCS as a climate solution, the challenges of scaling up the innovative technology, and ambitious plans for the cement and concrete industry to reach net-zero by 2050.
Carbon Capture & Carbon Removal: Friends or Foes?—w/ Gagan Porrwal of GE Gas Power's Carbon Solutions | Reversing Climate Change
Carbon capture and storage, or CCS, involves sequestering carbon dioxide emissions from a point source, whereas carbon removal takes existing emissions out of ambient air. And there are a lot of people in the climate community who are for carbon removal and against CCS, arguing that we should shut down these point sources and focus on renewable energy. But is choosing sides the right thing to do? Gagan Porrwal is Global Head of Partnerships for GE Gas Power's Carbon Solutions, where he is building an ecosystem of partners that enable, accelerate, and drive the adoption of CCS applications in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the Asian Pacific. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change’s Happy Hour show, Gagan joins Ross and Siobhan to explain why we need CCS to meet our 2030 climate targets and how he thinks about capturing carbon in the flue versus ambient air. Gagan discusses how much power is currently generated by coal or natural gas and describes the reality of how long it will take to transition to wind and solar. Listen in to understand the four key problems facing CCS—social acceptance, economics, infrastructure, and permitting—and find out why we can’t transition to renewables tomorrow, but we can take the next rational step toward clean energy in any given geography.
CDR Axed from Climate Plans | Nori
https://nori.com/podcasts/carbon-removal-newsroom/CDR-Axed-from-Climate-Plans-e1unsb6
Should carbon removal be included in institutional climate plans? It’s a debate that’s taken place across business, government, and science in recent years. The rise of the net-zero framework has sharpened the focus on how and when organizations should decarbonize. And how carbon removal fits in. Last week two influential organizations weighed in on how they plan to use carbon removal in the coming years. The Net-Zero Owner Alliance, a UN-convened group of 84 large investors, declared that their members will not be able to invest in carbon removal to reach their climate goals until at least 2030. And the European Commission released its draft Green Deal Industrial Plan, a new set of policy objectives to build out their climate infrastructure. It includes support for many decarbonization technologies, but at least one CDR NGO says it doesn’t do enough for carbon removal.
How well does soil actually store carbon? | Catalyst with Shayle Kann
https://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/catalyst-with-shayle-kann/id1593204897?i=1000581777015
Don’t miss our live episode of Climavores in New York City on October 20! Sign up here for a night of live audio and networking with top voices in climate journalism. There’s a buzz right now about paying farmers to trap and store emissions. Soil is a carbon sink, and certain farming practices accelerate carbon capture while others hurt it.Enter soil carbon credits to incentivize sequestration through methods like cover cropping, no-till farming and agroforestry. These are practices often included under the umbrella of regenerative agriculture. So what does science say about how well these methods actually lock away carbon? In this episode, Shayle talks to Eric Slessarev, staff scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he studies soil carbon.
Some of the topics talked about in the podcast:
1) US Climate policy,
2) Radical or heterodox economics, Neoclassical or orthodox economics, and the DICE model,
3) The need for urgent direct climate cooling to have any impact on reducing climate harm in the short-run (at least) the next few decades,
4) Discussions of local versus global, high leverage versus low leverage, with economic costs or benefits, direct climate cooling methods,
5) Discussion of net-zero warming plateau even as ocean uptake of carbon continues, to the disconnect between climate scientists and activists like us who are “screaming hair on fire” that only direct climate cooling can reduce climate harm now and the earlier “marching orders” that politicians and general public received that doing something about climate means “checking the box” on emissions cuts or net-zero,
6) How the long-run GHG reduction and removal coupled with natural regeneration is not going to happen (at least not expeditiously at scale) without massive transfers of funding and technology from rich to poor countries of well above $4 T per year,
7) How this expeditious transfer will not occur without a mandatory global cap and trade regime like Kyoto that transferred $303 B in mandatory CDM offset funding mostly to China, compared to the purely voluntary Paris Accord GCF voluntary donation efforts that have raised only $ 18 B,
8) How the EU that continued the Kyoto mandatory regime is only major region in the world to actually reduce GHG emissions since 1990,
9) Why focusing on and debating SAI as a single binary yes or no choice on climate cooling is ill informed and counterproductive to the cause of urgently focusing on and prioritizing direct climate cooling now,
10) As we work on GHG removal and natural regeneration so that we can emerge from our current energy and material “hunter gatherer” industrial civilization “Sinai” to the sustainable and potentially much more equitable renewable energy and materials “farmer cultivator” industrial civilization “promised land” in the long-run.
