How can we create a more equitable workplace? This week, we’ve heard stories of allyship, finding your voice and the toll the pandemic has taken on working parents, as LinkedIn News explores the barriers facing professional women and highlights those who choose to challenge them this International Women’s Day. But the conversation isn’t over. We want to hear from you. Share with us how you think employers can use the lessons of the pandemic to build a workplace where every professional can thrive. Write a post, article or share your thoughts in the comments below using the hashtag #womenatwork and join the conversation. This series is part of LinkedIn’s #ConversationsForChange initiative — celebrating #WomenAtWork for #IWD2021.

A thriving workplace starts with leadership not bosses. A mold takes time to shape an develop. its not instant, but with patience and investment with people comes growth.

It will take another 100 years to achieve gender equality, according to the World Economic Forum and how much more for gender and racial equity? I've been building community and purpose at work through focusing on inclusion and change for year now (and still very much keen and available to do more). We must start with hiring with diversity in mind and then moving forward with inclusive leadership. One huge challenge is education. I was in a Clubhouse call earlier where people in general just didn't think we should be trying to solve this. They felt things are the way they are for a reason and given time naturally things will adapt. Who are we to get involved with natural selection... what nonsense! Let's have conversations and share BP on how to reduce this 100 year goal. Let's all connect on this and commit to change.
Sometimes it can seem overwhelming to see and tackle the inequities of society, country or the world by wanting to change the whole infrastructure. So what can we do; workplaces and communities are microcosms of society and we can work together to make those changes in the businesses or workplaces and our own communities to make them more equitable and eventually that ripple effect will effect the bigger environment. Creating trust and psychological safety and making equitable places for all people to be able to be safe, heard, valued, supported and able to contribute. The opportunity to have compassion and empathy for one another and having difficult conversations and making changes towards the greater good of all and continually striving towards equitability.

3yTo have a meaningful discussion re: equity and equitable workplaces requires an understanding about what the terminology means and how it might apply to each and every individual in the workplace. Equitable practices require structural change and sustained structural change requires a shift in thinking, a cultural paradigm based on respect for each other and a desire and determination for change. Otherwise, equity, equal access and equitable work practices are mere rhetoric and political grandstanding, irrespective of workplace. For the debate to move beyond gender requires the issue of 'power' and 'domination' to be reviewed, discussed and in many cases called out where it is applied destructively for personal gain whether across genders or within each gender group. Cultural 'editing' to remain in power exists and is endemic within societies and cultural groups. Awareness, discussion, understanding of what this means and a preparedness to expose and thereby create an environment for meaningful change is enabled.
