Attitudes of Public Elementary School Teachers Towards School Learning Action Cell in the Division of Tanauan City: Basis for a Proposed Action Plan

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Teachers have one of the most important roles in our society -they mold and shape the future of every future Filipino child. Teaching is the noblest among all other professions because it influences the lives of children and causes a tremendous effect on their thinking and beliefs. For teachers to give the utmost service, the end goal of any profession, continuing professional development is a must. The Department of Education fully supports the continuing professional development of its teaching personnel based on the principle of lifelong learning and their commitment to the development of teacher's potential aimed towards their success in the profession. School Learning Action Cell, which primarily functions a professional learning community for teachers, is an activity for facilitating the learning of the know-how of teaching and learning process for them to perform their duties and responsibilities as effective and efficient teachers.

METHODS

The descriptive method of research was used in this study. This was used to describe the perceptions and attitudes of teachers toward the School Learning Action Plan. To gather the needed data and information, the researcher used a questionnaire which was based on the component/ objectives considered.

RESULTS

The teachers are open to changes, which is very important in coping with the trends and demands of education. There is a significant difference between the perceptions of respondents on the different components of the School Learning Action Cell. Most of the teacher respondents got a Very Satisfactory rating on their Individual Performance Review and Commitment Form (IPCRF). Finally, there is a significant relationship between the performance of the Teacher-Respondents and their Attitudes Towards the Components of the School Learning Action Cell.

DISCUSSIONS

From the data gathered in this study, it shows that an extensive training program must be initiated by the school heads to produce competent teachers and help them widen their expertise. A conclusive approach towards in-service training program will inspire better renovation, a tool in effective teaching and learners' performance. The teacher's positive attitudes towards SLAC will give way for their improvement and professional growth. The school head needs to strengthen their School Learning Action Cell program and encourage the teachers to have a more positive attitude, because it will help not only them but their pupils as well.
