Student Leader Advisory Council kick off call - facilitated NOT by me but by previous SLAC members!
For any student program the norm is to start with an orientation call for them.
But here’s how we do them differently with SLAC.
First the new members filled in a google form with what they wanted from the first call.
Then the past cohorts’ members got together, reviewed the google doc, and made plans for how they would run the first call for the new members.
5 SLAC members spanning all of our previous cohorts led this work.
I of course supported the new members to identify and prioritise the objectives they wanted. And supported the older cohorts with the analysis and prep, but they did a bulk of the thinking, and 90% of the facilitation for the call.
Here’s what a new cohort member said about the call:
“It is amazing hearing from the previous cohorts. The details they shared are so helpful in understanding what it means to be a SLAC member, and I have been encouraged by their stories of growth!” Paul Wambani, Teach For Kenya
Here’s a reflection from an older cohort member:
“I am incredibly proud and happy to be here today, and feel so nostalgic and emotional thinking about when I was in your place. Being a SLAC member shaped me in ways that are still affecting my choices and the direction I am going in right now.” Yelyzaveta Shelestova, Teach For Ukraine
Being able to truly live into our belief of our students being leaders today in multiple small and big ways like this one makes be incredibly proud of the work we do!
