2020 UPDATE: My first fan-edit deserved a new look since the original movie was finally re-released (April 2020) on Blu-ray at a considerably higher quality.

As an avid golfer myself, there are some great golf moments in this movie. There is unfortunately an over-the-top “80s romance” too, which hasn’t aged that well. My editing goal is to focus on the golf.

In my first edit, I was extremely harsh on my removal choices, basically removing any scene with Molly that wasn’t about golf. Unfortunately that let to Molly following Roy around without cause like a puppy dog. In this new version, Molly is getting some screen time back. And she is edited to be “less damsel-like” and seems smarter, more confident. And the golf gets the highlight it deserves with this new upgrade to the film quality:

“the only two DVD editions (released in 1997 and 2009) made use of the same source material, a dated master created back when laserdiscs were still being produced. Not surprisingly, Warner Archive's new Blu-ray marks a huge improvement; it's sourced from a recent 2K scan of the interpositive and looks great with strong image detail, plenty of visible film grain, and a pleasing palette that showcases Tin Cup's sun-baked locations. Warm earth tones are prominent with plenty of room for vivid greens, which are richly saturated but show no obvious signs of bleeding. As usual, the disc is well-authored and runs at an extremely high bit rate while completely avoiding compression artifacts, banding, and other eyesores. Overall, this is a very tight and stable image that, while clearly looking like a product of its time period, is so far beyond previous home video releases that die-hard fans will be thrilled.”

Update 10/2020:
When I was preparing the cover art, I found an awesome set photos with a monotone color grading that has a cool blue tint. I loved the way the photo felt classic and special. The set photos felt almost “Rat Pack” cool. I love the original movie and especially the new HD release, but the overall color saturation and obviously dated technology made it feel dated as well IMO. So I dove back in and tested an idea.

Personally, I love the new “cool blue noir” look. The footage feels more timeless, and the technology isn’t as distracting. The fashion looks less distracting too, allowing to focus on the golf. So I am very happy with it.

I also took the angle a little further, and mostly removed all but the center channel audio. Since this is supposed to feel older, I felt the single channel to Stereo conversion seems appropriate, and allowed much of the soundtrack to be reduced. There is still plenty of music, but it feels more intimate and universal. And I changed the end credit musical choice to something more appropriate.

Each and every cut was also re-examined to see if there was room for improvement. The AC/DC song was replaced with a more tone-appropriate ZZ Top. The RV scene was re-edited, as was the waffle house scene. Overall another minute was cut. New poster created from the inspiring photo and includes the original production cast sheet from the actual Press Kit for the movie.

Initial Run Time: 2h14m
New Edit Run Time: 1h56m

1920x800 AAC 320 kbps, 48 kHz Stereo

Here is the present cut list:
  • Trimmed Molly's explanation of her job
  • Removed Roy’s walk through strip bar to remove nudity.
  • Trimmed Roy's call with Doreen to remove blatant time off request.
  • Trimmed “Pink Fag Ball” line to “Pink Ball.”
  • Removed Molly's call with another psychologist.
  • Removed Molly watching Roy from inside her car.
  • Trimmed Molly in Roy's RV to remove her lack of confidence in her profession (since she mentioned at the beginning that its her life's work)
  • Removed Molly's mention of how she think Roy's arrogance is attractive
  • Removed Molly returning the Caddy to Roy and the resulting car ride.
  • Trimmed bar golf shot bet scene to remove Simms telling Molly that "she really looks good" at the end.
  • Removed RV sex scene
  • Trimmed Waffle house scene to remove Molly explaining that she is now sleeping with Roy
  • Removed final RV sleeping scene
  • Removed Molly's declaration of love
  • Trimmed and moved final RV couch discussion up before Romeo's tango.
  • Move Romeos tango to the end
  • Changed closing music to ZZ Top’s La Grange

This certainly sounds like a unique fanedit idea. Good luck :) .

This Cut is finished! Due to lack of enthusiasm, I do not think this needs to be submitted to the Academy. But PM me if anyone would like a link to the finished copy.

Admins, can we move this thread to Completed or Archived?

Im interested to see it, Costner gets a bad rap but he has a lot of good movies under his belt, love Open Range personally. We need variety on here you should submit it , makes a change from Star Wars and superhero stuff.

I never saw the movie, but I'm glad to see that someone has done an edit outside of the usual Star Wars/Hobbit/superhero stuff (which admittedly I do myself). ☺

i'm not telling you what to do or anything, but you should submit it anyway.
for nothing else than to get some official feedback; a test on the quality of your edit.
then it'll get listed.  someone might stumble upon it, you'll have yourself a sleeper hit.

(Can) Does Hollywood make anything else? I hear you I'm guilty of that as well. Maybe Hollywood will figure out the recipe one day and then we can just enjoy a movie for once   ;)

Agreed. I am super-hero'd out, indifferent to the Hobbit, and only a casual watcher of Star Wars, so seeing other movies like this -- while not my cup of tea -- is really nice. It's also nice to see older movies getting addressed. Good on you!

Wow, thanks for all the feedback! I guess it couldn't hurt to submit, although the current quality from the DVD I have is only 720x310 and not 5.1 audio. Couldn't find a Blu Ray.

It looks like iTunes has the only digital HD version available with all audio channels, I might take another shot at an Academy level edit.

Wow. I have the DVD which only has stereo audio channels and is 720. I looked for HD with 5.1 audio, which is only available through iTunes. Bought that, but the DRM makes it impossible to edit.

I suppose the current version is as high quality as I can legally produce so I'll PM an admin for approval. You can't say I didn't try though. Lots of trial software

Yeah, but I wan't looking to spend $45 more just for this Tin Cup Edit. Anyone already have the software that can run a file though for me?

No luck with trial software, (including Noteburner and Tunekit), none of the short sample clips were successful.

I will proceed with submitting the present version for Academy approval. Thanks again everyone for the support!
