On This Day in Telephone History May 15TH 1880

On This Day in Telephone History May 15TH 1880 the first telephone exchange in West Virginia opened at Wheeling. The Central District and Printing Telegraph Company installed a telephone switchboard in the basement of the Peoples Bank of Wheeling Building, establishing West Virginia’s first Central Office. One of Wheeling’s first boy operators was Harry Drummond and among the first girl operators was Miss Mattie Miner.
