CHANDIGARH: The animal husbandry department has launched the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) in the city to control livestock ailments by 2025 and eradicate those by 2030.
The objective is to vaccinate more than 24,000 heads of cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep, and pig in Chandigarh. The NADCP is the central government's scheme for the eradication of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and brucellosis.

Animal husbandry department director Tejdeep Singh Saini said: "Animal diseases impede the growth of the livestock sector.
Losses due to FMD and brucellosis are humongous and often beyond estimation. It has a direct negative impact on the trade of milk and other livestock products."
He said the vaccination of the target population in a continuous and systematic manner will result in better productivity and acceptability of Indian animal products in the world. The programme follows the Covid-19 guidelines at present.

Joint director Kanwarjit Singh Bhangoo said the ear-tagging of animals had started in all the areas of Chandigarh. This 12-digit ear tag will work as Pashu Aadhaar, a unique identification for all the departmental schemes. It will be required for all animal movement, sale, purchase and other related activities.
Recording this ID in the Information Network for Animal Productivity and Health (INAPH) is mandatory. The department hopes that an intensified campaign against FMD and brucellosis will help it accomplish the mission of doubling dairy farmers' income.
