In the pathway to financial independence, unbiased guidance is very important. One would welcome getting advice from people who do not have a vested interest such as professional financial advisors. This is where Floyd Saunders steps in, with his latest book “Five Paths to Wealth”.

Mr. Saunders, despite being a financial industry veteran, has always had the ability to look from an average Joe on the street perspective, when providing financial guidance. Ever since his first book Figuring Out Wall Street, he has proven himself to be a neutral thinker providing reliable non-biased financial advice purely with the intention of helping people make better financial decisions. He uses a combination of pep-talk (quoting Ben Franklin on being “moveable”) and simple and sound financial advice to motivate us into believing that, yes, our financial independence is in our hands, and yes, we can certainly master it. Mr. Saunders gives the confidence that the average Joe is intelligent enough to make financial decisions contrary to what the so-called bankers and financial advisors may think or say.

Mr. Saunders is delightfully forthright that this is not a get-rich-quick sprint, but a get-rich-by-changing-some-behaviors marathon, where one must follow a series of steps towards the ultimate goal of financial independence. Books on creating passive income channels galore, but Mr. Saunders manages to keep it quite simple and down-to-earth, breaking down the different avenues available into specific strategies that could be followed either by themselves or in combination with others. At no point does the author claim that this is a comprehensive list, but Mr. Saunders does make sure he covers all pathways deemed important and highly recommended.

The interesting aspect here is that, some of the advice could be reckoned very basic, yet, so few people tend to follow them. For example, “start living within your means” and “pay yourself first” seem commonsensical but it’s not ingrained in our culture to follow that advice. Consumerism prevails; entire countries run on them. Hence, Mr. Saunders makes the point that before one embarks on investing their money, they must have spare money to invest in the first place. And, he, rightfully, starts there with recommendations on how to carve out money for investing.

Though some of the advice are as old as the financial world itself, the author adds modern color to it through delving into phone apps and robo-advisors. One thing that this pandemic, which is about 20 months old now, has done is to help grow a new era of retail investors, as it simply requires a computer/smartphone and a brokerage account. They are using online forums like Reddit for discussing strategies or even “gaming” the system to some extent (pun intended. Remember Gamestop?). As an active trader myself, I have used a few of those and find them to be quite useful for the average retail investor. Personally, I am into options trading for generating a side income, and find a lot of advice online on potential trades. Mr. Saunders focuses on what we could term as “passive investing”. He urges having a long-term outlook and not getting caught up with short-term fluctuations. There are certain ways for making money in the short-term with active trading, but that’s not the intent of this book. The author rightfully keeps it to a more common retail investor who is trying to establish a path towards long-term financial independence.

That said, one thing this book can and does help is in providing a good basis and understanding for diving deeper into the stock market. What sets this book apart is that it lays a proper foundation of knowledge in simplistic terms, while providing guidance for more reading and learning as well. Mr. Saunders is not reluctant to quote other financial gurus who have published books and advice in the past. He weaves it all nicely together to capture the attention of the people looking to gain an initial foot-hold or looking for ideas to diversify. To that extent, this book is a good and must read.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Five Path’s to Wealth by Mr. Saunders. It is a bit hard for me pinpoint specifics on what I learned and enjoyed but making a general statement that I enjoyed the book is too generic. Here’s what I learned
    • Attitude about Money plays important role
    • Consistency (Invest consistently)
    • Focus
    • Understanding Investing VS Savings
    • Trading VS Investing.
Mr. Saunders covers lot of complex investing concepts and tips in simple terms . There are multiple examples of how to start the multiple streams of income which can help a person start investing. Most people have this idea that investing take a lot of money, this book show multiple ways to start investing with $5 -$30 $100.
One of the other valuable information in the books is brief reviews of various app to use for investing & Saving. I learned a lot about the types of real estate investing, Stocks, compound interest, etc. I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to start their journey to better their financial life.

Most financial planning books feel like they've been written in a "secret code" and the average person struggles to make heads or tails of it OR has to read a separate book just to understand the terminology used. Not this one and therein lies its subtle beauty. It covers planning from different places in life, for different people and does so in a clear and accessible way.

I enjoyed this book immensly. The author does not write over the head of the readers. I specifically enjoyed the part about how attitude truly effects our ability to seek financial freedom, and realize financial goals. A must read for those who need simplier instructions on investing and saving.

What a great book! Saunders lays out 5 achievable strategies in a clear and easy to understand manner. Lots of these books are full of gobbledygook Wall Street jargon or some kind of get-rich-quick scheme involving"other people's money". Not this one.
