It is honestly printed on the flimsiest cheapest paper I have r ever seen. That said Tony’s book is amazingly well written and factually accurate. It is an incredibly good read for anyone interested in this subject. A must buy despite the poor quality paperback!!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 January 2024Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThank you Tony Edwards for digging through and summarising oceans of evidence that disagree with the mainstream government view that all alcohol is to be avoided. It is amazing to see how research results can be twisted and misquoted. I checked a couple of random references (out of hundreds) and sure enough - the results were as he quotes... e.g. that alcohol can lead to better health outcomes, more successful aging etc. I don't understand how global governments get away with so much disinformation, but I am grateful that Tony has the energy and enthusiasm to investigate and share his evidence. I came away wishing that governments would focus more on the horrors of sugar and ultra-processed food. These are belatedly getting a higher level of exposure for the grim health they lead to, but government itself (and some of the medical community) is still reluctant to criticize food manufacturers. I wonder if the poor health outcome that is so often attributed to alcohol is actually the result of poor eating habits in many drinkers. Drinkers often snack on rubbish and/or eat less nutritious food. Perhaps alcohol has nothing to do with the ill health so often blamed on it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2024Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseA really interesting book, which I read all through in a couple of days. It really does deliver what it says on the tin, with lots of surprising information about how good wine is for your health - all garnered from the medical literature. As a woman, I was particularly reassured by the section on breast cancer - always a nagging fear at the back of my mind whenever I have a jolly night out. What’s clear from the book is that the breast cancer risk is very low, and that it’s easily prevented with nutrients. All of this is backed up by research which the book cites in plenty. The author is a former BBC science programmes producer, and he certainly lays the science on with a trowel. Despite that, the book is very readable, and the good news comes thick and fast the more you get into the book. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2024Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis provides lots of evidence to back up what I already suspected about the abstinence propaganda relentlessly peddled by media and governments…that it is captured by special interests with their own agendas and the advice promoted bears no relation to the actual scientific truth…
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a book that needed writing - a forensic examination of what the science really says about health and alcohol consumption, and wine in particular. It's an enjoyable read too.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2024Format: PaperbackWe are constantly told that alcohol is bad for us... there is no safe amount... drink fewer than X units if you're male and Y if you're female...
Tony Edwards has done the research so that you don't have to. Alcohol is not inherently bad for us... Zero intake is often associated with worse health than higher intake... The units were plucked out of thin air...
This is a super concise update to The Good News About Booze - get both!
It covers all the big issues - alcohol and disease, alcohol and longevity, alcohol and health benefits - with 340 references to back up the evidence presented.
I don't like the taste of alcohol, so I have no skin in the game. But evidence is evidence - and that's what Tony Edwards has assembled for us. Cheers!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2024Format: Kindle EditionI thought the book was fascinating and well researched and backed up with science. The author clearly "follows the science" better than the nanny state. An entertaining read I loved the bit about the virgin territory of the Nuns and their red wine. Highly recommended. Just to put this in context I have published a book about Alcohol Recovery so it was delightful to read this in that context.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise but complete. Serious medical journalism, yet a good read.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseFormer BBC science journalist Tony Edwards has done a superb job. It's quite a feat to summarise thousands of studies across decades. He cuts through the fog of newspaper articles that one moment tell you that moderate drinkers live longer, and the next say that wine causes a cancer.
If you drink wine then you probably want to be properly informed of any health risks. This is the book. And yes it's (surprisingly) good news, on balance.
How much wine drinking is bad? Does the pattern/regularity of drinking matter? Does wine make you fat?
All these questions are answered with a serious review of the evidence.... from epidemiological studies, to the more important, yet less reported, animal studies and hospital experiments. Tony Edwards is thorough.
I enjoyed reading it.
