Still a masterpiece!

An early creation by Francis Kurkdjian for Gaultier with an overdose of the sweet and golden vanilic accords.

It's also one of the first fragrances I bought for my own earned money in my leap year working in the Mediterranean. I was under the spell and what an effect it had when used in the heat of a Cypriot summer night by the sea!

It's just as I remember it and a lot of those memories I won't share here, but I thank all the Fragrant Gods that made the stars aligned and the resurrection happened!

I like the new bottle and the reasonable price too!

What I don't like is the minimalist mention of just the 3 main accords on here. Fragrantica should know better and do their job properly! There is plenty of tonka, patchouli, spices (clove/eugenol, corriander) and orange blossom in there. The mineral ambergris has benjoin in it as well. Please correct it, report on fragrances reliably, pay for chromatography if you need to because the misrepresentation of complexity here is not right for a platform of your caliber!

It actually performs very well on me, it's not as oily as the original, but I actually kinda like it.

I have a miniature of the old version and a 15ml travel spray of the new one. They’re the same to me.

Sadly it's not the same...

Ambergriz

Extremely disappointed. While it’s not the same scent, the new reformulation is quite beautiful and lovely and more mainstream appealing. However, the new reformulated is not the problem here . The problem is the 2023 bottle has no projection, sits close to skin at all times and longevity is 5 minutes and is at all times a skin scent. Even tho i ordered from Gaultier website , I feel like I been had and this is bootleg dupe knockoff (even tho it’s not) . DO NOT BUY THIS- save your money for a fragrance that actually has a decent performance. Although I hoped for the OG formulation(deep , musky , Resinous, dense , balsamic, smooth vanilla bomb with nuclear formula ) to be resurrected and it wasn’t , the issue is quality of this new formulation. It’s complete trash- and not worth $5. Why buy a fragrance that disappears before you actually leave the house and you can’t even smell it on yourself when your nose is dug into your arm? JPG is an amazing house and my fav designer scents , but with this one - they dropped the ball! And I’m not just saying this because the OG is a masterpiece which is my #1 fav nostalgic scent. The new scent with Jasmine is great (not nowhere near as niche and great as OG) but it’s simply not the worth $144. Buyer beware! I bought an OG version to fill my void as I needed a reason to live and Gaulter2 OG did that for me. I would have men, women, studs, queens, dragkings, trans following me - asking me “what are you wearing?” Since 2006 when I began wearing Gaultier2, I’ve been wearing OG for almost 20 years, since HS, and it is sex in a bottle . Gaultier2 OG is sooo sinful, decadent, luxurious, deep, niche , enchanting, intriguing, delicious, warm, erotic, dirty but beautiful. I’ve had to accept OG is never coming back , thus I’ll be hoarding OG bottles so I can have a reason to live again.

Dupes/substitutes: while there is no clone or dupes for Gaultier2 OG, lapidus altimar , Lattafa khamara, grand soir , Lattafa eternal oud are the closest substitutes but they still do not suffice and can never dream of being the masterpiece that Gaultier OG is/was!

tdavis99

While this is a lovely scent and very addictive, I thought this performed weak at first . However, after letting it sit for several months the performance improved greatly . I am really enjoying it now ! Give it time and let it sit!

I was 18 when I first discovered this gem, and it was like nothing I’d ever smelt before. I’d been introduced to fragrances from an early age, Fahrenheit, Jazz, Eternal, Blue jeans etc, all
pretty run-of-the-mill stuff. But this was different, unique, it almost smelt a bit dirty to me. Most people around me at the time hated it, but I didn’t give a shit, it was sex in a bottle to me and I couldn’t get enough of it. By the summer of ‘07 my then girlfriend (now wife) had become pregnant, giving birth to our beautiful daughter in the spring of ‘08. Life really started coming at me fast. I guess I decided that smelling so sexy just wasn’t for me anymore. I wanted to smell more “grown up”, more “sophisticated” (Jubilation enters the chat), my love affair with Gaultier 2 was over. However my love of fragrance was only just beginning. Over the years I’ve always been drawn to heavier fragrances that often divide opinions; Interlude, 24 gold, Monsieur etc. It was Gaultier 2 that broke me in though. She had my “heavy fragrance” virginity and held a special place in my heart. Some years ago I decided I needed to experience her again, I picked up the phone and to my disappointment discovered she wasn’t around anymore. My old flame was gone, ohhh how I pined for her. Suddenly nothing else compared! All I had were my memories, and I was starting to doubt their accuracy. When I heard that JPG were bringing the old girl back I had mixed emotions. Of course I was excited but equally anxious that she wouldn’t live up to her old rep for one reason or another. Either JPG would get it horribly wrong or my romanticised memories were about to set me up for a massive anti-climax. Either way I knew I had to own a bottle. I missed the first drop (absolutely gutted untilI I read the negative reviews!!). Then a while ago I got another e-mail about the next drop, no way was I missing out again, especially after hearing they had fixed whatever was so wrong with the first batch! I received my bottle and I couldn’t be more impressed. It’s exactly as I remember, if not better. Pure sex, dirty sex at that! If you liked it back then, buy it!! If you never smelt it before but you enjoyed this review, blind buy it!! Thank you JPG, you came through!!

zimaprim

I was very excited when JPG announced recreation of Gaultier2. But my excitement had been ruined after just one hour after application. While version 2005 lasted for hours and hours, 2022 version seems to be like fake version of its original. Very very very disappointed and sad. Still have half bottle of 2005 version which I keep as precious jewel – this fragrance means very much to me.

iGamebreaker

As far as I understand, there are two variations of the newer release of Gaultier2.
Gaultier 2 (2022) has Jasmin, Sandalwood and Ambergris as main notes.
Gaultier 2 (2023) has Musk, Amber and Vanilla as main notes.

Gaultier2 (2005) also has Musk, Amber and Vanilla.

I never smelled the Jasmin (2022) based variation but I'm in love with the OG. So after the "reformulation" I decided to go for it. So I coped a bottle of the Musk, Amber and Vanilla based one.
Have some of the OG left and could compare. Opening scared me because it was way too white florally. After 10-15 minutes it's identical to the OG. Couldn't even tell on which arm I had sprayed the OG.

Haven't tried enough to compare the performance and longevity yet, but I think the OG performs slightly better. I'll keep you updated. Thanks for reading.

wondervalley666

I haven't tested the original. I'm a big fan of several JPG scents and always wanted to try this one, but didn't want to spend a few hundred bucks on a 15yr old used ebay bottle.

My bottle says amber, vanilla, and musk, I ordered from California on the official JPG site about a week ago and it was delivered today!

Well, I love it! I've definitely smelled it before, but not in a long time. The overall scent reminds me of the late 90s/early 2000s, what hot single people at the bar smelled like. First spray comes out a touch alcohol-musk-perfumy but within seconds it transforms *temporarily* into a warm salty sweet gourmand - it actually reminds me of the popcorn note in Pure XS, but without the fruity sweetness. I love this phase and wish it lasted forever, but it fades quickly for me, as does the popcorn note in Pure XS. As it continues to dry down, the salty sweetness fades into a warm soft powdery vanilla musk with subtle vintage vibes. The vintage and powdery elements reminds me of Classique, but the musk makes this probably one of the most truly unisex scents I've encountered. It's a nice musk that is rich yet soft and doesn't turn pissy on my skin like some other frags I've sampled. So many unisex scents are either so woody they just smell like mens cologne, or so sweet and vanilla-heavy that I can't imagine many straight cis men choosing them. This feels truly like it can go either way. It isn't ultra femme nor distinctly masculine. I'm sure young girls will hate it for not smelling like a cupcake, and people who hate vintage style scents won't love it, but I do!

After a shower, I grabbed the sweater I was wearing when I sprayed this and the arm I wore this on smelled exactly like Aliens distinct jasmine note, which surprised me. I see jasmine on the list of notes, but I didn't notice it until several hours later. It's also specifically the Alien type of jasmine, which I love the scent of, even though the new bottles of Alien don't last or project on me for more than a few hours. This scent sure does seem to do a lot and transform into different fragrances as it dries down!

This is a great addition to my collection for fall and winter. It smells like something I want to wear with a leather jacket on a chilly evening while going to a hip restaurant, a dive bar, or a loud club. If sprayed gently, it can probably work well in offices also as it doesn't project loudly across the room and hangs out closer to the skin after an hour or so. The scent smells *clean* somehow... like I just got dressed after a good long shower. I guess that's where the soapy descriptions come from.

Coincidentally, the scent I was wearing today prior to sampling this is BR540, which was created by the same designer as the original Gaultier2, and both go really well together.

Another JPG masterpiece in my collection!

Aromatherapi

Im truly CONFUSED ... I see two " versions " of the 2022 release being offered and sold in identical packaging .

what is going on ?? some list the following ingredients : Jasmine . Sandalwood. Amber .
The other ones list : Musk , Vanilla and Amber . It would seem that we will percieve a different scents .... So which one of these two will most resemble the ORIGINAL release which we all appreciate and Love . Feedback welcome .

whatare3

Got mine today and I really like this scent. I definitely feel this fragrance is right in the middle unisex but it does remind me of a sort of perfume a female relative wore in the 90’s.

ssslus

Just received mine today. I wish they would have sent a sample of the G2 with the order so it could be tried before opening the actual fragrance. They did include a perfumed sticker ( that smells just like the original version I remember), but that can't be applied on the skin...
Notes listed on the box are Musk Vanilla Amber.
The fragrance itself is similar, but the opening has a lot of jasmine and smells like a hand soap on my skin. I don't recall any white flowers in the original formulation.
About an hour later, the scent is finally almost identical to the OG, although close to the skin. Im going to play with this and see. :)

knics33

Located in the States and just received my bottle… the notes listed on the box are vanilla, musk and amber.

While I never had the opportunity to smell the original, this is a lovely amber fragrance. It’s sweet, but definitely unisex IMO. I may love this as much as Aerin’s Amber Musk and Dior’s Ambre Nuit. If you love amber fragrances, I’d absolutely recommend. I look forward to wearing this during fall and winter.

hawa438

Can anyone comment on the longevity and silage of the October 19th release batch? Thank you : )

josh_itom

Back in stock on the US website since 10/19 midday. Just ordered mine, let's see what this batch will bring, finger crossed! Been saving a little of my original bottle to compare! I think is coming back for good this time!

Suliciu

Longevity and Projection - Zero!

Sidonie Sera

Received mine off the US site a couple of weeks ago (there was a drop in mid-September that quickly sold out).

My box lists Jasmine, Sandalwood and Ambergris as the notes. Seems like the European market is getting the Musk, Vanilla and Amber bottles. JPG USA says this will be back in stock in October, so it'll be interesting to see what notes the new US October-drop lists (someone please update here if possible).

I had the original formulation. This new one has the same DNA on dry down as the original. Not identical. Heavy on the Jasmine and a little less warm and rich. But it's close enough to make me happy.

Deanoh_11

In the UK and just received mine today from JPG site. The back of my box states Musk, Vanilla and Amber 🥳. Not opened yet but will update when I do.

erbium

Super disappointed/confused. I bought 2 bottles on the re-release 9/13/2023 bc there could be no way vanilla/musk/Amber could go wrong but both bottles I received have the Jasmine/Sandalwood/Ambergris notes listed on the box (even though the page I ordered it from said it would be Vanilla/Musk/Amber). It came with a scented sticky thing that I guess is supposed to be the scent and I hate it but I never smelled the original so I can’t say if it’s the same or not…. What the heck.

Reached out to JPG and they are looking into the inconsistency between website and bottle & provided me with this note list:

Ambergris | Vanilla | Musk | Jasmine | Orange Blossom | Sandalwood | Benzoin | Coriander | Rice | Rose | Tonka Bean | Aromatic Notes | Patchouli

Which makes it even more confusing that it was advertised ONLY as Vanilla/Musk/Amber (with a hint of jasmine on the top) on the website when there isn’t even amber listed in the notes. I also hate patchouli so I don’t know why this wouldn’t have been advertised 😕 going to return both bottles

JustinPowell

WHAT?! Can someone clarify what's going on here? The JPG website shows the original notes of amber, vanilla and musk for this 2022 formulation. Fragrantica shows notes of jasmine, sandalwood and ambergris. And if you scroll down and read the review posted by "Nazthegasman", it gets more confusing! That reviewer is suggesting there are two versions of the Gaultier 2 reissue! I would definitely want to try the latest 2022 version IF there's no jasmine in it (?) and it keeps the original notes of amber, vanilla and musk. Also, does anyone know who the perfumer is behind this reissue?

Campestra

Just got mine from their official website (Set/23) and I’m glad to say it is very similar to the original. In my case even better than the OG - I had it but sold it as it was too heavy for me. Imo this batch is perfect, sweet woody amber but way more balanced. I’m very happy I got it back in my collection.

Nazthegasman

UPDATE, On rhe 11th Feb 2023 I left a really bad review...I've bought another bottle this month and this time I'm really really pleased!!!
OK let me explain, the 1st version of the 2023 relaunch had ambergris, sandalwood and jasmine as its ingredients...also the color was a very weak goldish hue..DID NOT SMELL LIKE THE ORGINAL ...I have 2 x 2005 versions as reference..
Now.....the 2nd version had the original ingredients listed as it ingredients Amber, Vanilla and Musk!!! The color is very dark gold, just like the original...sprayed it this morning and I can still smell it on me!!!!

Thank you PUIG for doing right by the fans of this fragrance!!!!

Billy71

Just received my bottle, unwrapped and sprayed. Took me back to the naughtiest. It’s 99% the same. I’ve loved this fragrance since it was first launched and I was gutted that it was deleted but I have kept my stockpile over the years so am able to compare it to the deodorants, body sprays and even a bottle of the original which I have to say has changed due to its age. The new one is just as good and is in one word - Delicious!

Thefrog6734

I have both the re-release of 2022 & 2005. The overall smell is almost identical the 2005 has something more complex to it but the difference is minimal and I have found the 2005 has a better longevity. I still love it and will probably purchase a second bottle as it is my go to scent. I have been using the 2005 very sparingly and using a dupe brand that is almost identical but again lacking longevity so I ust that for work and the genuine versions for social/special occasions.

Jean Paul Gscepi

AWESOME UPDATE: I reached out to JPG French press rep & explained my difficulties finding it it both in Europe & here in the dates (New York). They gave me a very kind response, & even shared that it will be sold in the U.S. starting this month! (September 2023).

Please if anyone knows where I can purchase this online over seas that ships to the U.S. I’ll be eternally grateful! I beg for my own sanity at this point if you have a link or site I can find it from you’ll be my hero!

Suicidal_wizard

How can it be the same or even similar to the original if the notes are completely different?

RayIna

Had a big expectations from this one, but something told me it couldn't be good enough... It lacks in richness, density and in complexity of notes. I could compare this reformulation to Kouros vintage and the one from 2012, dna is the same, but the whole impression totally different, flat accords, there's some unnecessary flowers... Performances are good, that's the good thing.

Dan talks Scents UK 🇬🇧

Just reviewed the 2022 version of this on my Dan talks scents UK 🇬🇧 .
Many have said its been reformulated and lacks the depth of the 2005 batch.
This is very floral and soapy and reminded me slightly of another discontinued gem from the house - fleur du male.

Performance and projection are average which is a shame because this smells damn good.

Need to get a sample of the 2005 batch to compare.

joselucianosandemaite40

Nov 24 is a month after they released it on Gaultier.com exclusively..I cannot find anywhere outside of Gaultier's site..If somebody finds in in the USA , let us know

ambersniffer

What a cash-grab from mister Gaultier.. why it only lasts 2 hours on my skin? what a shame...

Thedonsl

Just received it today! It’s exactly like the original! Amazing and brings back memories.

I had to have a friend in UK purchase it and ship to USA. It came with a free tote back with JPG art on it. Very happy with the fragrance and will have to purchase more to stock up!

DomfromBE

It will only be sold on line, at the moment. Check your official JPG webstore.

jellybeantree

So happy I repurchased this and that they reissued it! This is floral powdery ambery and long-lasting. I will be wearing it a lot in the winter. 9/10 Bravo for JPG to bring it back!

gnathaliegh

I have never smelled the original Gaultier², so I cannot say how similar this one is but I'm also lucky that I didn't have any expectations for this. This perfume was on my wish list pretty much as soon as it was announced, mainly because of its cult following and people being so excited for this release.
Luckily, Gaultier² was a very succesful blind buy for me. This scent is simply gorgeous. Warm, cozy, soft and creamy but still present and noticeable. It's a perfect blend of the notes - a combination of the ones listed here and the amber, vanilla and musk JPG is advertising on the website. It's quite sweet and vanilla forward and to me it leans slightly more feminine with a classic, almost "vintage" feeling to it while still being very wearable and appropriate for casual wear. On me, longevity is around 5-6 hours with strong projection in the first couple of hours. Very happy to have this in my collection.

salle karpe

I am blown away by this! It just arrived and is exactly as I remember it all those years ago. Simply divine. Very dark juice which is always an indicator of a perfume’s strength. Gorgeous musky floral ideal for autumn and winter months and the ambergris is to die for! I shall treasure this because it’s a one off. Thank you Gaultier for bringing this sumptuous fragrance back to life. The packaging was lovely too, not to mention free samples and a miniature bottle of Le Beau. I am very pleased with my purchase and free delivery too!!❤️❤️

Spiros_cypriot

tested this today side by side with the vintage version. it smells the same and has a huge projection just like the vintage. the only difference is theres a slightly more floral and creamy drydown on skin. welcome back gaultier2!!!

Eibextario

@Deutsch100 because your creative writing exercise was completely made up and I felt a need to call you out for it.

Nazthegasman

I waited 13 years and 10 months for this??? This was my signature scent for years and I paid over £200 per bottle many times after it was discontinued.
Reformulated to hell and not back, I've got 2 original gaultier 2 bottles as reference.

My verdict is....this smells similar to the original of 2005, but i am seriously disappointed.

I sprayed some this morning at 7am and by 10am I couldn't smell it on myself..
(The original gaultier 2 would last till the next frigging time I had a shower!)
They've taken the vanilla out, I can't smell it at all.

Bottle is nice and sleek..way too much jasmine and sandalwood in my opinion.
I hate to sound like the male equivalent of a
Drama Queen but I'm frigging heartbroken on this one..I feel like PUIG are peeing on my back and telling me its raining.

Scottishscentguy

Got my bottle today. Can't comment on how close it is to the original as I have not smelt it but this smells ok although it is lacking in the performance department. Will be selling.

ILB5

I received my bottle this morning and it was love at first sight.. well, again (after 17 years)
Some people here seem to be very upset/angry about the new notes that are advertised. I was slightly concerned but thought it would be best to actually smell it before reviewing. It’s worth noting that the JPG site now advertises the original notes of Vanilla, Amber and Musk.
It smells amazing, dreamy, tasty and just like the original (in my opinion)
As soon as I walked into the office this morning, several people asked me what I was wearing! I am very happy that this is back and even if it is a new composition, it’s still close enough to the original to fool me and I love it.

joselucianosandemaite40

If someone find this somewhere where the ship it to the USA let us know..I want to get it..Thanks

LuckyStar1

Ordered my bottle £79 UK JPG site. Cannot wait to smell this as I enjoyed the original magnetic bottle I once owned.
Update: My bottle arrived and I sprayed it on my hand and I was catapulted back to when I had the original. It smells very similar to me or so damn close I can't really tell the difference. Very nice sleek bottle and good sprayer. It's very woody and soapy on my skin. I'm so glad I managed to get this.
Update November 2023: Managed to purchase the original Gaultier 2 sealed bottle. The original definitely has more vanilla than the new release bottle I purchased which was more floral. I much prefer the original now that I own it again. A lot more vanilla and Amber.

BlueWalker

Who is the nose of this perfume? Why does Gaultier hide so much? When the October release was announced, I've been waiting since the 1st. So I waited 28 days. They should have said that from the beginning.

Deutsch100

@Eibextario....WHY are you copying my review of this new Gaultier 2 and posting it as your own? Creeper!

Thedonsl

I see you can order from UK or France websites now, but not to the US. How is anyone getting it here? I have a friend in Europe that will ship it to me, but trying to avoid the hassle for him.

Troudujol

I received it this morning. The French official website now mentions the pyramid of 2005, while the one that is indicated on the packaging of the perfume is the new one we had until then, namely jasmine, sandalwood, ambergris. I wonder if the brand didn't realize that they were making a mistake by communicating on a pyramid that had nothing to do with the original. Now, what about the fragrance? It's clearly a reissue of the original, the resemblance is definitely there. But I find that this new version is less full, less round, and you fall faster in the base notes. So I prefer the original, but maybe it's due to the fact that the last bottles I have are at least 12 years old, and therefore have matured differently which could have sweetened the fragrance.
So I don't regret my purchase, even if I didn't find my old love.
And then why make it a limited edition that will still create a frustration at the end of the operation...

Thedonsl

How is anyone buying this? I was on the list also and only got an email it was available now, but on the website no matter what country you choose you cannot order it.

adamdavid1974

Tried to order but it’s not available in the US. Would love to hear about the reviews about this one.

ManyParfum1977

Yessss, Just orderd a bottle. €100 and 100ml

ivaylops

You have to be such a beta male/female to downvote a fragrance, before even trying it and giving it a chance.

ssslus

And just like on iTunes, people are writing reviews before its release.

Thedonsl

I will never go by the reviews on this site again. Such a joke that everyone is rating this cologne and it is not even released yet.

BlueWalker

Still not released.

Eibextario

Still not released, despite some creative writing exercises suggesting otherwise. No, you can not magically find bottles of this in places where they shouldn't exist just by going on a little hunt.

Deutsch100

I remember the original Gaultier 2, and it was a fav of mine even though 99% of the time I wore Angel edP. I was really disappointed that this new release was only going to be sold in a few European countries (I currently live in the USA). I went on a hunt, and found a small perfume store on Beverly Boulevard, just outside of Beverly Hills, California and the shop owner (somehow) had a few new & unopened bottles of this new Gaultier 2. I am really happy I got to buy one, but also sad that JPG chose to re-issue a beloved and requested scent, and then change it :(

The dry down eventually does kind of resemble the original, but this new re-issue of Gaultier 2 is way more "soapy" and while the notes list jasmine, I keep smelling orange blossom (a lot of it). The once warm, sexy and luscious scent of the original Gaultier 2 is gone, to me.

Eibextario

Fragrantica should purge all existing ratings. This has not yet been released. It will be released this month.

Midnight Lady

This better be at leasr half as good as OG. Great news!

DanielJD

I’ve been waiting for this since around February this year! Gaultier announced it on their website along with the ‘Glory Wall’ - I do hope it stays faithful to the original but let’s be realistic… it’ll probably smell a little different to the OG, we’ll see!

ION

I had the original and liked it enough: "It was the smell of vicinity". For such a monolithic perfume, the name "2" or "Gaultier2", always felt a bit misplaced, but not if you think what I've said before.
With this newer version, I hope they remain faithful to the original (a bit of articulation in the formula wouldn't hurt), but change it to the point it loses its original character, would make me feel 'cheated'.
You, as well.

bolancb

PUIG YOU ARE THE BEST FOR BRIGING THIS BABYYYY BACK INTO PRODUCTION TY TY TY 😊 🙏🏼 💗! I HAD THE OG AND I SOLD IT BUT I WAS IN A PINCH IT IS WHAT IT IS, NOW ITS BACK! THIS JUICE IS A MASTERPIECE DONE BY THE MASTER MFK ENOUGH SAID!!!

Ihaggins

I think folks who downvote fragrances before smelling them should have their voting privileges revoked. It messes up the integrity of the whole website. Why not just use the comments to share your disapproval of the presentation, note breakdown, or whatever arbitrary non-smell related dislike?

miako

Wait, how is it a comeback if the notes are totally different...?

bittersweetpoison

Omg omg! I can’t believe this! this is my signature scent- saved a bottle for years because they discontinued it! I couldn’t be happier! Best thing that happened to me this year! Lol 💕
