How can governments harness Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance public service delivery? How might it refine interventions and support new initiatives? What does its future look like? These questions, among others, were addressed on April 5th at a joint workshop organized by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and J-PAL South Asia. The event, which brought together over 130 participants, including key officials like S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY,  Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary MeitY and Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, focused on the practical applications of AI) in public service delivery and governance.  During the workshop, Iqbal Dhaliwal and Aparna Krishnan from J-PAL delivered presentations, emphasizing the importance of considering AI to address specific challenges through tailored solutions. Using case studies from J-PAL’s work, they also provided insights into the use of AI to enhance efficiency and inclusivity in government operations and setting the Theory of Change framework for the adoption of AI. The discussions underscored the importance of high-quality data, ethical AI practices, and collaborative efforts across government sectors to integrate AI effectively into policy design and implementation to achieve better outcomes. 📢 Urvashi Wattal, our Associate Director - Policy, last week participated in a lively panel discussion on "The Power of Investing in the Last Five Years of Young Adults at School - Transforming Learning and Life Outcomes for Youth" at the #SkollWorldForum2024, hosted by Transform Schools, People For Action at this year's Marmalade Festival in Oxford! It's an important debate that has captured the attention of researchers, funders and other development practitioners worldwide who have been mulling ways to improve the learning outcomes of young adults worldwide. Weighing in on the discussion, Wattal highlighted the Post Primary Education (PPE) initiative at J-PAL, which aims to improve access, quality, and equity in secondary education across LMICs. She shared insights on how low-cost interventions tested by J-PAL affiliates in Peru–such as correcting perceptions about education benefits and providing resources for higher education, can significantly boost enrollment. In addition, she discussed the impact of the ‘Taaron ki Toli’ program by Breakthrough Trust, which was tested from 2014 to 2016 by J-PAL-affiliated researchers in Haryana. This program has shown promising results in empowering girls and reshaping gender norms.
